Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors
Translation
✧ The Day of al-Nubāh Abū ʿUbaydah said: Banū ʿĀmir went out seeking Ghatafān to obtain their vengeance for the Day of al-Raqam and the Day of Sāḥūq, and they came upon Banū ʿAbs while no one from Ghatafān was with them. ʿAbs had not been present on the Day of al-Raqam or the Day of Sāḥūq with Ghatafān, nor had they assisted them against Banū ʿĀmir. It is also said: rather, Ashjaʿ and Fazārah and others from Banū Ghatafān had been present, as we shall mention. He said: Banū ʿĀmir raided the camels of Banū ʿAbs, Dhubyān, and Ashjaʿ, seized them, and returned heading for their lands, but they lost their way. They entered the valley of al-Nubāh and went deep into it, having no path or way out until they approached its end. The two mountains had almost met when they came upon a woman of Banū ʿAbs beating leaves from a tree for them on the mountain peak. They asked her about the way out. She said to them: "The horsemen are the way out." She had seen the horses approaching while she was on the mountain, but Banū ʿĀmir did not see her because they were in the valley. So they sent a man to the mountain peak to look. He said to them: "I see a people like boys on the backs of horses, the heads of their spears at the ears of their horses." They said: "That is Fazārah." He said: "And I see a white people with curly hair, as if they wore red garments." They said: "That is Ashjaʿ." He said: "And I see a people like vultures who have uprooted their horses with their blackness, as if carrying them with their thighs, grasping the foreparts of their spears and dragging them." They said: "That is ʿAbs. Sudden death has come to you!" The pursuit caught up with them in the valley. ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl was the first to escape on his horse al-Ward, and he outstripped the people, but his horse al-Ward became exhausted—it was also al-Marbūq—so he hamstrung it lest Fazārah capture it. The people fought, and the battle continued between them. ʿĀmir was defeated and a great slaughter befell them. Among their nobles killed were al-Barāʾ b. ʿĀmir b. Mālik, after whom his father was given the kunyah, and Nahshal, Anas, and Hazār, the sons of Murrah b. Anas b. Khālid b. Jaʿfar were killed, and they killed ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ṭufayl, the brother of ʿĀmir; al-Rabīʿ b. Ziyād al-ʿAbsī killed him, and many others besides. The defeat of Banū ʿĀmir was complete.
