Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors
يَوْمُ أَعْيَارٍ وَيَوْمُ النَّقِيعَةِ كَانَ الْمُثَلَّمُ بْنُ الْمُشَجَّرِ الْعَائِذِيُّ ثُمَّ الضَّبِّيُّ مُجَاوِرًا لِبَنِي عَبْسٍ، فَتَقَامَرَ هُوَ وَعُمَارَةُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، وَهُوَ أَحَدُ الْكَمَلَةِ، فَقَمَرَهُ عُمَارَةُ حَتَّى اجْتَمَعَ عَلَيْهِ عَشَرَةُ أَبْكُرٍ، فَطَلَبَ مِنْهُ الْمُثَلَّمُ أَنْ يُخَلِّيَ عَنْهُ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَ أَهْلَهُ فَيُرْسِلَ إِلَيْهِ بِالَّذِي لَهُ، فَأَبَى ذَلِكَ، فَرَهَنَهُ ابْنُهُ شِرْحَافُ بْنُ الْمُثَلَّمِ فَأَتَى قَوْمَهُ فَأَخَذَ الْبَكَارَةَ فَأَتَى بِهَا عُمَارَةَ وَافَتَكَّ ابْنَهُ. فَلَمَّا انْطَلَقَ بِابْنِهِ قَالَ لَهُ فِي الطَّرِيقِ: يَا أَبَتَاهُ مَنْ مِعْضَالٌ ؟ قَالَ: ذَلِكَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي عَمِّكَ ذَهَبَ فَلَمْ يُوجَدْ إِلَى السَّاعَةِ. قَالَ شِرْحَافٌ: فَإِنِّي قَدْ عَرَفْتُ قَاتِلَهُ. قَالَ أَبُوهُ: وَمَنْ هُوَ ؟ قَالَ: عُمَارَةُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ سَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ لِلْقَوْمِ يَوْمًا وَقَدْ أَخَذَ فِيهِ الشَّرَابُ إِنَّهُ قَتَلَهُ وَلَمْ يَلْقَ لَهُ طَالِبًا. وَلَبِثُوا بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ حِينًا وَشَبَّ شِرْحَافٌ. ثُمَّ إِنَّ عُمَارَةَ جَمَعَ جَمْعًا عَظِيمًا مِنْ عَبْسٍ فَأَغَارَ بِهِمْ عَلَى بَنِي ضَبَّةَ فَأَخَذُوا إِبِلَهُمْ، وَرَكِبَتْ بَنُو ضَبَّةَ فَأَدْرَكُوهُمْ فِي الْمَرْعَى. فَلَمَّا نَظَرَ شِرْحَافٌ إِلَى عُمَارَةَ قَالَ: يَا عُمَارَةُ أَتَعْرِفُنِي ؟ قَالَ: مَنْ أَنْتَ ؟ قَالَ: أَنَا شِرْحَافٌ، أَدِّ إِلَيَّ ابْنَ عَمِّي مِعْضَالًا، لَا مِثْلَهُ يَوْمَ قَتَلْتَهُ ! وَحَمَلَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَتَلَهُ، وَاقْتَتَلَتْ ضَبَّةُ وَعَبْسٌ قِتَالًا شَدِيدًا وَاسْتَنْقَذَتْ ضَبَّةُ الْإِبِلَ، وَقَالَ شِرْحَافٌ: أَلَا أَبْلِغْ سَرَاةَ بَنِي بَغِيضٍ بِمَا لَاقَتْ سَرَاةُ بَنِي زِيَادِ وَمَا لَاقَتْ جَذِيمَةُ إِذْ تُحَامِي وَمَا لَاقَى الْفَوَارِسُ مِنْ بِجَادِ تَرَكْنَا بِالنَّقِيعَةِ آلَ عَبْسٍ شَعَاعًا يُقْتَلُونَ بِكُلِّ وَادِ وَمَا إِنْ فَاتَنَا إِلَّا شَرِيدٌ يَؤُمُّ الْقَفْرَ فِي تِيهِ الْبِلَادِ فَسَلْ عَنَّا عُمَارَةَ آلَ عَبْسٍ وَسَلْ وَرْدًا وَمَا كُلُّ بَدَادِ تَرَكْتُهُمُ بِوَادِي الْبَطْنِ رَهْنًا لِسِيدَانِ الْقَرَارَةِ وَالْجِلَادِ
Translation
✧ THE DAY OF AʿYĀR AND THE DAY OF AL-NAQĪʿAH Al-Muthallam b. al-Mushajjar al-ʿĀʾidhī, then al-Ḍabbī, was dwelling as a neighbor of Banū ʿAbs. He and ʿUmārah b. Ziyād, one of the perfect ones, gambled together, and ʿUmārah won from him until ten young camels were owed to him. Al-Muthallam asked him to release him so that he might go to his people and send him what was due to him, but he refused. So he gave him his son Shirḥāf b. al-Muthallam as a pledge. He went to his people, took the young camels, brought them to ʿUmārah, and ransomed his son. When he departed with his son, he said to him on the way: "O my father, who is Miʿḍāl?" He said: "That is a man of your paternal uncles' sons who went away and has not been found until this hour." Shirḥāf said: "I have come to know his killer." His father said: "And who is he?" He said: "ʿUmārah b. Ziyād. I heard him say to the people one day, when drink had taken hold of him, that he had killed him and had met no seeker for him." They remained after that for a time, and Shirḥāf grew up. Then ʿUmārah gathered a great host of ʿAbs and raided Banū Ḍabbah with them, and they took their camels. Banū Ḍabbah mounted and overtook them at the pasture. When Shirḥāf saw ʿUmārah, he said: "O ʿUmārah, do you know me?" He said: "Who are you?" He said: "I am Shirḥāf. Deliver to me my cousin Miʿḍāl — no one like him on the day you killed him!" And he charged him and killed him. Ḍabbah and ʿAbs fought a severe fight, and Ḍabbah recovered the camels. Shirḥāf said: Will you not convey to the chiefs of Banū Baghīḍ what the chiefs of Banū Ziyād met, And what Judhaymah met when it defended, And what the horsemen of Bijād met? We left at al-Naqīʿah the people of ʿAbs Scattered, being killed in every valley. And none escaped us except a fugitive Heading for the desert in the wastelands of the lands. Ask about us, ʿUmārah, the people of ʿAbs, And ask Ward — and not everything is a matter of rivalry. I left them in the valley of the belly As a pledge to the wolves of al-Qarārah and the hard ground.
