Translation
✧ The Day of Sāḥūq Abū ʿUbaydah said: The Banū Dhubyān raided the Banū ʿĀmir while they were at Sāḥūq. Over Dhubyān was Sinān b. Abī Ḥārithah al-Murrī, and he had equipped them, given them horses and camels, and provisioned them. They seized many cattle and returned. Then the Banū ʿĀmir caught up with them and they fought a fierce battle. Then the Banū ʿĀmir were routed, some of their men were struck down, and they rode into the desert. Most of them perished of thirst, for the heat was intense. Dhubyān would overtake a man of theirs and say to him: 'Halt, and your life is yours; lay down your weapon.' And he would do so. It was a grievous day for ʿĀmir. ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl and his brother al-Ḥakam fled. Then al-Ḥakam grew weak and feared being taken captive, so he put a rope around his neck, climbed a tree, tied it, and let himself hang, and he was strangled. A man of the Banū Ghanī did the like, but when he let himself fall he regretted it and thrashed about, so they caught up with him, rescued him, and reproached him for his panic. ʿUrwah b. al-Ward al-ʿAbsī said of that: We came upon ʿĀmir in their abodes at dawn with the dregs of spears and a remembered striking, with every slender-edged Indian blade, and supple spear of Khaṭṭ, filed to a brown point. I marveled at them, strangling themselves, while their slaying beneath the battle-din would have been more fitting.
