Translation
✧ The Day of Dhāt Nakīf Banū Bakr b. ʿAbd Manāh b. Kinānah were filled with hatred for Quraysh and bore rancor against them because of what Quṣayy had done when he expelled them from Makkah together with those of Khuzāʿah whom he expelled when he apportioned it into quarters and plots among Quraysh. When it came to the time of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, they resolved to expel Quraysh from the Sacred Precinct and to fight them until they overcame them for it. Banū Bakr raided camels belonging to Banū al-Hūn b. Khuzaymah and drove them off; then they gathered their forces, and Quraysh gathered their forces and made ready. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib concluded the alliance between Quraysh and the Aḥābīsh, who are Banū al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd Manāh, Banū al-Hūn b. Khuzaymah b. Mudrikah, and Banū al-Muṣṭaliq of Khuzāʿah. They met Banū Bakr and those who joined them, with ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib in command of the men, and they fought at Dhāt Nakīf. Banū Bakr was routed and suffered a swift slaughter, and they did not return to war against Quraysh. Ibn Shuʿlah al-Fihrī said: For God’s sake, eyes of one who saw a band that erred, the error of Bakr on the day of Dhāt Nakīf; they made their camels kneel at our tents and our women, and they were guests for us with the worst of hosts. On that day ʿAbd b. al-Saffāḥ al-Qārī of al-Qārah killed Qatādah b. Qays, the brother of Balʿāʾ b. Qays, and Balʿāʾ’s name was Musāḥiq. On that day it was said: “Al-Qārah has dealt fairly with the one who shot at it.” Al-Qārah is from the offspring of al-Hūn b. Khuzaymah, which is from the offspring of ʿAḍal b. al-Dīsh. One of their men said: Leave us as Qārah; do not put us to flight, lest we stampede like the stampede of the male ostrich. It is said that by this verse they were named Qārah. Al-Qārah used to be called the marksmen of the pupil.
