Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors

وَقِيلَ: إِنَّ قَيْسَ بْنَ زُهَيْرٍ لَمْ يَسِرْ مَعَ عَبْسٍ إِلَى ذُبْيَانَ وَقَالَ: لَا تَرَانِي غَطَفَانِيَّةٌ أَبَدًا وَقَدْ قَتَلْتُ أَخَاهَا ✧ The Battle-Days of Dāḥis and al-Ghabrāʾ — the battle-days of Dāḥis and al-Ghabrāʾ, which were between ʿAbs and Dhubyān. The cause of that was that Qays b. Zuhayr b. Jadhimah al-ʿAbsī set out to Madinah to equip himself for fighting ʿĀmir and to take revenge for his father. He came to Uḥayḥah b. al-Julāḥ to buy from him a described coat of mail. He said to him: “I will not sell it; were it not that the Banū ʿĀmir would blame me, I would have given it to you as a gift. But buy it for a weaned camel colt.” He did that and took the coat of mail, which was called Dhāt al-Ḥawāshī, and Uḥayḥah also gave him other coats of mail as a gift. He returned to his people having finished his equipment. He passed by al-Rabīʿ b. Ziyād al-ʿAbsī and invited him to help him take his revenge, and he agreed to that. When he wanted to part from him, al-Rabīʿ looked at his saddlebag and said: “What is in your travelling bag?” He said: “A wonderful item; if you saw it, it would amaze you.” He made his riding camel kneel down, took out the coat of mail from the bag, and al-Rabīʿ saw it and was impressed by it and put it on, and it reached his full height. He withheld it from Qays and did not give it to him. Messengers went back and forth between them about that, and Qays insisted on demanding it, while al-Rabīʿ insisted on withholding it. When days grew long over that, Qays sent his family off to Makkah and stayed waiting for an opportunity to catch al-Rabīʿ off guard. Then al-Rabīʿ sent his camels and properties to a pasture with abundant herbage, and ordered his family, and they set out. He mounted his horse and went to the encampment. The news reached Qays, so he set out with his family and brothers and intercepted al-Rabīʿ's women's litters, and took hold of the halter of his mother Fāṭimah bt. al-Khurshub and the halter of his wife. Fāṭimah, al-Rabīʿ's mother, said: “What do you want, O Qays?” He said: “I will take you to Makkah and sell you there because of my coat of mail.” She said: “It is under my guarantee; let us go.” So he did. When she came to her son, she spoke to him about the coat of mail, but he swore that he would not return it. So she sent to Qays informing him of what al-Rabīʿ said. He then raided al-Rabīʿ's camels and drove off four hundred camels from them, and went with them to Makkah, sold them, and bought horses with the proceeds. Al-Rabīʿ pursued him but did not catch up with him. Among the horses he bought were Dāḥis and al-Ghabrāʾ. It is said: Dāḥis was from the horses of the Banū Yarbūʿ, and that his father had taken a horse belonging to a man of the Banū Ḍabbah called Unayf b. Jabalah. The horse was called al-Sibṭ, and Dāḥis's mother belonged to the Yarbūʿī. The Yarbūʿī asked the Ḍabbī to let his horse cover his mare, but he refused. When night came, the Yarbūʿī went to the Ḍabbī's horse, took it, and made it cover his mare. The Ḍabbī woke up and did not see his horse, so he called out among his people, and they responded. He had seized the Yarbūʿī and told them the news. Ḍabbah became angry at that and said to them: “Do not be hasty; here is the seed of your horse, take it.” The people said: “He has been fair.” A man from the people then pounced on her and inserted his hand into her womb and took what was in it. The mare only increased in pregnancy, and she gave birth to a colt, and he was named Dāḥis for this reason. The Yarbūʿī had two sons of his own. Qays b. Zuhayr raided the Banū Yarbūʿ, plundered, and took captives. He saw the two boys, one of them on Dāḥis and the other on al-Ghabrāʾ, and he chased them but did not catch them. He returned, and among the captives were the boys' mother and two sisters of theirs. Dāḥis and al-Ghabrāʾ had fallen into his heart, and that was before what happened between him and al-Rabīʿ took place. Then a delegation of the Banū Yarbūʿ came to ransom the prisoners and captives, and he released all of them except the boys' mother and their two sisters. He said: “If the two boys bring me the colt and the grey mare al-Ghabrāʾ; otherwise no.” The two boys refused that. An old man of the Banū Yarbūʿ who was a captive with Qays said, and he sent it to the two boys: “A colt that ransoms al-Ribāb and Jamlā and Suʿādā is the best colt of any people. Give Dāḥis for them quickly; it is one of the wise deeds. Without it, by Him to whom people make pilgrimage, they are captives who will be sold for horses. Qays sees the swift one among horses as life in the destroyer of breaths. He buys the noble horse with large, bulky camels; he gives freely without haggling.” When the verses reached the Banū Yarbūʿ, they led the two horses to Qays and took the women. It is said: Qays made Dāḥis cover a mare of his, and she gave birth to a filly, and he named her al-Ghabrāʾ. Then Qays stayed in Makkah, and its people boasted against him, and he was boastful. He said to them: “Set aside your Kaʿbah and your sanctuary from us, and bring whatever you wish.” ʿAbd Allāh b. Judʿān said to him: “If we do not boast against you with the Inhabited House and the secure sanctuary, then with what shall we boast against you?” Qays grew weary of boasting against them and resolved to depart from them. The Quraysh were pleased with that because they had disliked his boasting. He said to his brothers: “Let us depart from them first, otherwise evil will grow worse between us and them. Let us join the Banū Badr, for they are our equals in nobility, our paternal cousins in lineage, the nobles of our people in generosity, and those with whom al-Rabīʿ cannot reach us.” Qays and his brothers joined the Banū Badr, and he said during his journey to them: “I travel to the Banū Badr with a matter in which they have the choice over us. If they accept the protection, then they are the best of people; and if they dislike the protection, then it is no shame. We came to al-Ḥārith al-Khayr b. Kaʿb in Najrān — and what refuge is like a protector! We sought the protection of those who, when a stranger comes to them, settles in a spacious abode. He feels safe among them and becomes one of them, like the undergarment is to the outer garment. And if we are left alone in war against the sons of our father without a protector, then God is my protector.” Then he alighted with the Banū Badr and stayed with Ḥudhayfah, and he and his brother Ḥamal b. Badr granted him protection. He stayed among them, and he had with him horses belonging to him and his brothers the like of which did not exist among the Arabs. Ḥudhayfah used to go morning and evening to Qays and look at his horses, envying him for them while concealing that in himself. Qays stayed among them for a time, and they honored him and his brothers. Al-Rabīʿ became angry and resented that against them, and he sent them these verses: “Listen, convey to the Banū Badr a message concerning what has been of hatred and vengeance: that I have always been a friend to you, defending Fazārah from every matter. I make peace with your peace and repel from you the horsemen of the people of Najrān and Ḥajr. My father, your paternal cousin Ziyād, was the close friend of your father Badr b. ʿAmr. You have given refuge to the brother of treacheries, Qays, and you have filled my chest with burning rage. Enough for me from Ḥudhayfah is the embracing of Qays, and the beginning was from Ḥamal b. Badr. Either you send him back and I return to you, or if you refuse, I have made my excuse ample.” They did not change from protecting Qays. Al-Rabīʿ became angry, and ʿAbs became angry because of his anger. Then Ḥudhayfah came to dislike Qays and wanted to expel him from among them but found no pretext. Qays resolved to perform ʿumrah and said to his companions: “I have resolved to perform ʿumrah. Beware of entangling with Ḥudhayfah in anything. Bear patiently whatever comes from him until I return, for I have recognized evil in his face. He can only get what he wants from you if you bet him on horses.” He was a man of sound judgment who did not err in what he intended, and he set out for Makkah. Then a young man of ʿAbs called Ward b. Mālik came to Ḥudhayfah and sat with him. Ward said to him: “If only you would take a stallion from Qays's horses to be a foundation for your horses.” Ḥudhayfah said: “My horses are better than Qays's horses,” and they insisted on that until they agreed to bet on two horses from Qays's horses and two horses from Ḥudhayfah's horses, with the wager being ten herds of camels. Ward set out and came to Qays in Makkah and informed him of the situation. He said to him: “I see that you have gotten me into trouble with the Banū Badr and fallen with me. Ḥudhayfah is an oppressor whose soul is not content with the truth, and we will not accept injustice from him.” Qays returned from ʿumrah, gathered his people, rode to Ḥudhayfah, and asked him to annul the wager, but he did not. A group of Fazārah and ʿAbs asked him, but he did not agree to that. He said: “Unless Qays acknowledges that the winning is mine; otherwise no.” Abū Jaʿdah al-Fazārī said: “O family of Badr, abandon the wager, for we have grown weary of obstinacy over the wager. Leave the man as a protected neighbor in Fazārah; what is hidden from you is like what is seen. Would that I knew about Hāshim and Ḥuṣayn and Ibn ʿAwf and Ḥārith and Sinān — when your obstinacy brings Qays to them, whether you come with the opinion of a sober man or a drunkard.” Ḥudhayfah asked his brothers and the leaders of his companions about abandoning the wager, but he insisted on it. Qays said: “On what do you bet me?” He said: “On your two horses, Dāḥis and al-Ghabrāʾ, and my two horses, al-Khaṭṭār and al-Ḥanfāʾ.” It is said: the wager was on the two horses Dāḥis and al-Ghabrāʾ. Qays said: “Dāḥis is faster.” Ḥudhayfah said: “Al-Ghabrāʾ is faster,” and he said to Qays: “I want to teach you that my insight into horses is keener than yours.” The first is more correct. Qays said to him: “Extend the distance and increase the prize.” Ḥudhayfah said: “The course is from Ublā to Dhāt al-Iṣād, which is about one hundred and twenty bowshots, and the prize is one hundred camels.” They trained the horses. When they had finished, they led the horses to the starting point, gathered crowds, and put on weapons. They deposited the prize with ʿIqāl b. Marwān b. al-Ḥakam al-Qaysī, and appointed trustees over the release of the horses. Ḥudhayfah stationed a man of the Banū Asad on the road and ordered him to meet Dāḥis in the valley of Dhāt al-Iṣād if he passed by in the lead, and to throw him down to the bottom of the valley. When the horses were released, Dāḥis took a clear lead, while the people watched him, and Qays and Ḥudhayfah were at the head of the goal with all their people. When Dāḥis descended into the valley, the Asadī intercepted him, slapped his face, and threw him into the water. He almost drowned, he and his rider, and he did not come out until the other horses had passed him. As for the rider of al-Ghabrāʾ, he diverted from Dāḥis's path when he saw him delayed, then returned to the course and met up with Ḥudhayfah's two horses. Then al-Ḥanfāʾ fell, and al-Ghabrāʾ and al-Khaṭṭār remained. When the ground was rough, al-Khaṭṭār took the lead, and when it was smooth, al-Ghabrāʾ took the lead. When they drew near the people while on soft ground, al-Khaṭṭār went ahead. Ḥudhayfah said: “He has outrun you, O Qays.” Qays said: “Wait a little; they are climbing the hard ground,” and it became a proverb. When the ground became level, Ḥudhayfah said: “By God, our man has deceived us.” Qays said: “He who runs from one hundred and twenty has abandoned deception,” and it became a proverb. Then al-Ghabrāʾ came in first, followed by al-Khaṭṭār, Ḥudhayfah's horse, then al-Ḥanfāʾ, also his, then Dāḥis came after that with the boy riding him at a leisurely pace. The boy told Qays what had been done to his horse. Ḥudhayfah denied that and claimed the win unjustly, saying: “My two horses came one after the other.” Qays and his companions went until they looked at the people who had detained Dāḥis, and they differed. The news reached al-Rabīʿ b. Ziyād, and that pleased him. He said to his companions: “By God, Qays is ruined. It is as if I see him — if Ḥudhayfah does not kill him — he will come to you seeking protection. By God, if he does, we have no choice but to take him in.” Then the Asadī regretted detaining Dāḥis and came to Qays and confessed what he had done, and Ḥudhayfah reviled him. Then the Banū Badr treated Qays and his brothers with contempt and harmed them with words. Qays reproached them, but they only increased in wrongdoing against him and harm to him. Then Qays and Ḥudhayfah fell into dispute over the prize until they nearly came to blows, but the people restrained them. Ḥudhayfah's wrongdoing and injustice became apparent to them, yet he insisted on claiming the prize. He sent his son Nudbah to Qays to demand it from him. When he delivered the message, Qays thrust at him and killed him. His horse returned to his father, and Qays called out: “O Banū ʿAbs, departure!” So they all departed. When the horse came to Ḥudhayfah, he knew that his son had been killed. He shouted among the people, mounted with those who were with him, and came to the dwellings of the Banū ʿAbs and found them empty. He saw his son slain, went down to him, kissed him between his eyes, and they buried him. Mālik b. Zuhayr, Qays's brother, was married among Fazārah and was dwelling among them. Qays sent to him: “I have killed Nudbah b. Ḥudhayfah and departed, so join us or you will be killed.” He said: “Qays's sin is upon him,” and did not depart. Qays sent to al-Rabīʿ b. Ziyād asking him to return to him and stay with him, since they were kinsmen and family, but he neither agreed nor refused, and he was pondering that. Then the Banū Badr killed Mālik b. Zuhayr, Qays's brother, who was dwelling among them. The news of his killing reached the Banū ʿAbs and al-Rabīʿ b. Ziyād, and it weighed heavily on them. Al-Rabīʿ sent a spy to Qays to bring him news of him, and he heard him saying: “Will the Banū Badr escape with the killing of Mālik while Rabīʿ fails us in calamities? Before him, Ziyād was a shield against fate when a dreadful day struck. Say to Rabīʿ: follow the deeds of his elder, for people are only either preservers or squanderers. Otherwise I have no place to stay in the lands, and the affair of the Banū Badr is all upon me.” The man returned to al-Rabīʿ and told him. Al-Rabīʿ wept for Mālik and said: “Sleep has been withheld, and I do not close my eyes for an hour, out of grief for the great news that travels by night. After the killing of Mālik b. Zuhayr, can women hope for the outcomes of the pure? Whoever is pleased with the killing of Mālik, let him come to our women in daylight. He will find the women unveiled, wailing for him, and they rise before the breaking of dawn, striking their free faces for a young man of ample generosity, not at all weak. They used to conceal their faces out of modesty, but today they have come out for the onlookers.” And it is long. Qays heard it, so he rode with his family and headed toward al-Rabīʿ b. Ziyād while he was repairing his weapons. Qays dismounted to him, and al-Rabīʿ stood, and they embraced and wept, and they showed grief for the loss of Mālik. The people met one another and dismounted. Qays said to al-Rabīʿ: "No one who seeks refuge with you flees from you, and no one who seeks your help can do without you. You have had my worst day, so let me have your best day. I am with my people, and my people are with you. The people have struck Mālik, and I do not intend evil, for if I fight Banū Badr, Banū Dhubyān will aid them, and if they fight me, Banū ʿAbs will forsake me—unless they all unite against me. I and the people are equal in blood: I killed their son, and they killed my brother. If you help me, I will covet them; if you forsake me, they will covet me." Al-Rabīʿ said: "O Qays, it does not benefit me to see for you excellence that I do not see for myself, and it does not benefit you to see for me what I do not see for you. Mālik has inclined against me while you are both wronged and wronging: they wronged you concerning your racehorse, and you wronged them concerning their blood, and they killed your brother for their son. If blood is matched by blood, then perhaps war will conceive, I will stand with you, and the more beloved of the two matters to me is making peace with them and leaving us to war with Hawāzin." Qays sent for his family and companions, and they came and dismounted with al-Rabīʿ, and ʿAntarah b. Shaddād recited to them his elegy for Mālik: For God's sake, eyes of him who saw the like of Mālik, a sacrifice of a people when two horses raced. Would that they never tasted life after her, and would that they never met for a wager. Would that they both died together in a land, and Qays missed them, so they are not seen. They brought a great gathering for the fall of Mālik, and he was noble, glorious, of pure stock. And he was, when there was a day of dread, they have known that I and he were two youths. And we were in the clamor, protecting our women, and striking at distress every fingertip. You will see, if I remain after you, and my time and long life enable me, I swear truly, if you remained for a glance, your eyes would be cooled when you see me. It reached Ḥudhayfah that al-Rabīʿ and Qays had agreed, and that distressed him, and he prepared for calamity. It is said that the lands of ʿAbs had become barren, so its people sought pasture in the lands of Fazārah, and al-Rabīʿ sought protection from Ḥudhayfah and stayed with them. When news of Mālik’s death reached him, he said to Ḥudhayfah: "I have a covenant of three days." Ḥudhayfah said: "That is yours." So al-Rabīʿ departed from Banū Fazārah. That reached Ḥamal b. Badr, so he said to his brother Ḥudhayfah: "What a bad opinion you held: you killed Mālik and let al-Rabīʿ go! By God, he will kindle a fire against you." So the two rode in pursuit of al-Rabīʿ, but he escaped them, and they knew that he had concealed evil intent. Al-Rabīʿ and Qays agreed, and Ḥudhayfah gathered his people, and they made a pact against ʿAbs. Al-Rabīʿ and Qays gathered their people and prepared for war. Fazārah raided Banū ʿAbs and captured cattle and men. ʿAbs became furious and gathered for a raid, but Fazārah was warned of them. They went out to them and met at a water called al-ʿAdhq, and it was the first battle between them. They fought a fierce fight, and ʿAwf b. Yazīd was killed—Jundub b. Khalaf al-ʿAbsī killed him. Fazārah was routed and slaughtered with a swift slaughter, and al-Rabīʿ b. Ziyād captured Ḥudhayfah b. Badr. Ḥurr b. al-Ḥārith al-ʿAbsī had vowed that if he got power over Ḥudhayfah, he would strike him with the sword, and he had a sharp sword called al-Aṣram. He wanted to strike him with the sword when he was captured, to fulfill his vow. Al-Rabīʿ sent to his wife, and she hid his sword, and they forbade him from killing him and warned him of the consequences. But he refused anything but striking him, so they placed men upon him, and he struck him, but the sword did nothing, and Ḥudhayfah remained a captive. Ghaṭafān gathered and worked for peace, and they made peace on the condition that they would cancel the blood of Badr b. Ḥudhayfah for the blood of Mālik b. Zuhayr, and pay blood-money for ʿAwf b. Badr, and give Ḥudhayfah for the blow that Ḥurr struck him two hundred camels, all to be made ten-camel shares, and four slaves, and Ḥudhayfah would cancel the blood of those killed from Fazārah in the battle, and he was released from captivity. When he returned to his people, he regretted that and his speech against Banū ʿAbs became bad. Qays b. Zuhayr and ʿUmārah b. Ziyād rode and went to Ḥudhayfah and spoke with him. He answered them with agreement and would return to them the camels he had taken from them, and they had multiplied with him. While they were in that, Sinān b. Abī Ḥārithah al-Murrī came to them and denounced Ḥudhayfah’s opinion of peace and said: "If you must do it, give them lean camels in place of their camels and keep their offspring." That suited Ḥudhayfah’s opinion, but Qays and ʿUmārah refused that. It is said that the camels they demanded from him were camels he had taken as a stake from Qays. It is also said that Mālik b. Zuhayr was killed after this mentioned battle. Ḥumayd b. Badr said about that: We killed for ʿAwf Mālik, and he is our revenge, and whoever invents something other than truth commits wrong. Sinān kept urging Ḥudhayfah to war, and they prepared for it. Then the Anṣār learned what they intended, and a group of their chiefs agreed—namely ʿAmr b. al-Iṭnābah, Mālik b. ʿAjlān, Uḥayḥah b. al-Julāḥ, Qays b. al-Khaṭīm, and others—and they set out to make peace between them. They reached them and went back and forth about agreement, but Ḥudhayfah did not agree to that, and his wrongdoing became clear to them, so they warned him of its consequence and turned away. Ḥudhayfah raided ʿAbs, and ʿAbs raided Fazārah, and the evil worsened. Ḥudhayfah sent his brother Ḥamal, and he raided and captured Rayyān b. al-Aslaʿ b. Sufyān, bound him tightly, and carried him to Ḥudhayfah, who released him so that he would give as hostages his two sons and Jubayr the son of his brother ʿAmr b. al-Aslaʿ. Rayyān did that. Then Qays went to Fazārah and met a group of them, among them Mālik b. Badr, and he killed him, and Fazārah was routed. Then Ḥudhayfah took the two sons of Rayyān and killed them while they cried for help: "O our father!" until they died. As for the son of his brother, his maternal uncles prevented him. When Mālik and the two boys were killed, the war intensified between the two parties, and most of it was against Fazārah and those with them. On some days they met and fought a fierce fight, and the war lasted between them until the end of the day. Rayyān b. al-Aslaʿ saw Zayd b. Ḥudhayfah and charged at him and killed him, and Fazārah and Dhubyān were routed. Al-Ḥārith b. Badr was overtaken and killed, and ʿAbs returned safe, with none of them struck. When Zayd and al-Ḥārith were killed, Ḥudhayfah gathered all of Banū Dhubyān and sent to Ashjaʿ and Asad b. Khuzaymah and gathered them. That reached Banū ʿAbs, so they gathered their outlying groups. Qays b. Zuhayr advised racing to the water of al-ʿAqīqah. They did that, and Ḥudhayfah marched with his gatherings against ʿAbs. Envoys went between them, and Ḥudhayfah swore that he would not make peace until he drank from the water of al-ʿAqīqah. Qays sent him some of it in a waterskin and said: "I will not let Ḥudhayfah deceive me." They made peace on the condition that Banū ʿAbs give Ḥudhayfah the blood-money for those killed on his side, and they placed hostages with him until they collected the blood-moneys, which were ten. The hostages were a son of Qays b. Zuhayr and a son of al-Rabīʿ b. Ziyād. They placed one of them with Quṭbah b. Sinān and the other with a blind man from Bakr b. Wāʾil. Some people reproached Ḥudhayfah for accepting blood-money, so he and his brother Ḥamal came to Quṭbah b. Sinān and the Bakrī and said: "Hand over to us the two boys so that we may clothe them and send them back to their families." Quṭbah handed over the boy with him, who was the son of Qays, but the Bakrī refused to surrender the one with him. When they took the son of Qays, they went back and met on the road a son of ʿUmārah b. Ziyād al-ʿAbsī and a cousin of his, and they seized them and killed them along with the son of Qays. When that reached Banū ʿAbs, they took what they had collected of the blood-moneys, loaded it on men, and bought weapons. Then Qays went out with the group, and they met a son of Ḥudhayfah with horsemen from Dhubyān and killed them. Ḥudhayfah gathered and marched to ʿAbs, and he was at a water called ʿArāʿir. They fought, and the victory was for Fazārah, which returned safe. Ḥudhayfah pressed on in the war, but his brother Ḥamal disliked it and regretted what had happened, and he spoke to his brother about peace, but he did not agree. He gathered gatherings from Asad and Dhubyān and the rest of the clans of Ghaṭafān and marched toward Banū ʿAbs. ʿAbs gathered and consulted about their affair. Qays b. Zuhayr said to them: "What has come to you is beyond your power, and Banū Badr want nothing but your blood and gain over you. As for others, they want nothing but wealth and plunder. The right opinion is that we leave the wealth in its place, leave with it two horsemen on Dāḥis and on another swift horse, and we ourselves depart and be one stage away from the wealth. When the people come to the wealth, the two horsemen will ride to us and inform us of their arrival. The people will busy themselves with plunder and seizing wealth. If those of sound opinion forbid them, the common people will oppose them, their formation will break, and every man will busy himself with guarding what he has captured, and they will hang their weapons on the backs of the camels and feel safe. Then we will return to them when the two horsemen arrive and overtake them while they are in a state of dispersal and scattering, so no one of them will have any concern but for himself." They did that, and Ḥudhayfah and those with him came and busied themselves with plunder. Ḥudhayfah and others forbade them, but they did not accept it from him, and they were in the state that Qays had described. Banū ʿAbs returned while Asad and others had dispersed, and Banū Fazārah remained at the rear of the people. They charged at them from their sides, and Mālik b. Subayʿ al-Taghlibī, the chief of Ghaṭafān, was killed, and Fazārah was routed with Ḥudhayfah among them, and he separated with five horsemen and hastened in flight. His news reached Banū ʿAbs, and Qays b. Zuhayr, al-Rabīʿ b. Ziyād, Qirwāsh b. ʿAmr b. al-Aslaʿ, and Rayyān b. al-Aslaʿ—whose two sons Ḥudhayfah had killed—followed him. They tracked their traces at night, and Qays said: "It is as if I see the people having arrived at Jafr al-Habāʾah and dismounted there." They traveled all their night until they overtook them at sunrise at Jafr al-Habāʾah at the water. They had sent their horses to graze, and they seized them all. Qays and his companions came between them and their horses. With Ḥudhayfah in the jafr were his brother Ḥamal b. Badr, his son Ḥiṣn b. Ḥudhayfah, and others. Qays, al-Rabīʿ, and those with them rushed upon them while they were calling: "Labbaykum! Labbaykum!"—meaning they were answering the call of the boys when they were killed and called out: "O our father!" Qays said to them: "O Banū Bakr, how did you see the consequence of wrongdoing?" They adjured them by God and kinship, but they did not accept from them. Qirwāsh b. ʿAmr circled until he stood behind Ḥudhayfah and struck him, breaking his backbone. Ḥudhayfah had raised Qirwāsh until he grew up with him in his house. They killed his brother Ḥamal, cut off their two heads, and spared Ḥiṣn b. Ḥudhayfah because of his youth. The number of those killed in this battle from Fazārah, Asad, and Ghaṭafān was more than four hundred killed, and from ʿAbs more than twenty killed. Fazārah called this battle al-Bawār. Qays b. Zuhayr said: The best of the dead stood over al-Habāʾah, and the noblest of them, Ḥudhayfah, does not depart. All of Qays was bereaved of him, the clients of the people and the people of pure lineage. And through his death the distant was afflicted, and through his death the close friend was singled out. And it is long, and he also said: Do you not see that the best of people has become at Jafr al-Habāʾah, not departing? Were it not for his wrongdoing, I would not cease weeping over him forever as long as the stars rise. But the youth Ḥamal b. Badr did wrong, and wrongdoing's pasture is unwholesome. They said much about the Day of al-Habāʾah. Then ʿAbs regretted what they had done on the Day of al-Habāʾah, and some of them blamed others. Fazārah gathered to Sinān b. Abī Ḥārithah al-Murrī and complained to him of what had befallen them. He considered it great and blamed ʿAbs, and he resolved to gather the Arabs and take revenge for Banū Badr and Fazārah, and he sent out his messengers. A great multitude of Arabs gathered, beyond counting. He forbade his companions from touching wealth and plunder and ordered them to be patient. They marched to Banū ʿAbs. When their march reached them, Qays said: "The right opinion is that we do not meet them, for we have made them blood-enemies, and they demand from us old grudges and claims. They saw what befell them yesterday from their occupation with plunder and wealth, so they will not touch it now. What we should do is send the women and wealth to Banū ʿĀmir, for the blood is ours before them, so they will not molest you. Those with strength and endurance will remain on the backs of horses, and we will delay fighting them. If they refuse anything but fighting, we will have secured our families and wealth, and we will fight them and endure. If we win, that is what we want; if the other happens, we will have taken precautions and joined our wealth, and we will be on a defensive force." So they did that, and Dhubyān and those with them marched and overtook the Banū ʿAbs at Dhāt al-Jarājir, and they fought a fierce battle that day, then separated. When the morrow came, they returned to the encounter and fought more severely than on the first day, and in those days the courage of ʿAntarah b. Shaddād became manifest. When the people saw the severity of the fighting and the great number of slain, they blamed Sinān b. Abī Ḥārithah for his preventing Ḥudhayfah from peace, and they regarded him as an evil omen and advised him to spare the blood and return to peace, but he did not do so and wished to resume war on the third day. When he saw the slackness of his companions and their inclination to peace, he departed and returned. When he had left them, Qays and the Banū ʿAbs departed to the Banū Shaybān b. Bakr and became their neighbours, and they remained with them for a time. Qays saw from the youths of Shaybān what he disliked in the way of their assailing and seizing their property, so the two of them departed from them. A body of Shaybān followed them, and the Banū ʿAbs met them and they fought, and Shaybān was routed, and ʿAbs marched to Hajar to ally themselves with their king, who was Muʿāwiyah b. al-Ḥārith al-Kindī. Muʿāwiyah resolved to raid them by night, but the news reached them, so they departed from him in haste, and Muʿāwiyah marched in haste in their tracks. The guide deliberately led them astray so that they should not overtake ʿAbs until they had caught up with them and their mounts were exhausted. Then they overtook them at al-Furūq, and they fought a fierce battle, and Muʿāwiyah and the people of Hajar were routed, and ʿAbs pursued them and seized some of their property and killed of them as many as they wished. Then they returned and journeyed on and alighted at a water called ʿArāʿir, where there was a sub-tribe of Kalb. They mounted to fight the Banū ʿAbs, and al-Rabīʿ went out and sought their chief, and the chief went out against him, whose name was Masʿūd b. Maṣād. The two fought until they fell to the ground, and Masʿūd wished to kill al-Rabīʿ, but the helmet slipped from his neck, and a man of the Banū ʿAbs shot him with an arrow and killed him. Al-Rabīʿ sprang upon him and cut off his head, and ʿAbs charged Kalb with the head on a spear, and Kalb was routed, and ʿAbs captured their property and their offspring. Then they marched to al-Yamāmah and allied themselves with its people of the Banū Ḥanīfah, and they stayed three years. But they did not treat them well as neighbours and straitened them, so they departed from them. Many of them had dispersed, some of them had been killed, their mounts had perished, and the Arabs held a grudge against them. Then the Banū Ḍabbah sent to them and offered them residence among them so that they might seek their help in the war against Tamīm, and they did so and became their neighbours. When the affair between Ḍabbah and Tamīm was settled, Ḍabbah changed towards ʿAbs and wished to cut them off, so ʿAbs fought them and prevailed and captured some of the property of Ḍabbah. Then they marched to the Banū ʿĀmir and allied themselves with al-Aḥwaṣ b. Jaʿfar b. Kilāb, and he rejoiced in them so that he might be strengthened by them in the war against the Banū Tamīm, because it had reached him that Laqīṭ b. Zurārah wished to raid the Banū ʿĀmir and take vengeance for his brother Maʿbad. So ʿAbs stayed with the Banū ʿĀmir, and Tamīm came against them, and the battle of Shiʿb Jabalah took place, which we shall mention, God willing. Then Dhubyān raided the Banū ʿĀmir b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah, and among the latter were the Banū ʿAbs, and they fought, and ʿĀmir was defeated, and Qirwāsh b. Hunayy al-ʿAbsī was taken prisoner without being recognised. When they brought him to the encampment, a woman of theirs recognised him, and when they knew him, they handed him over to Ḥiṣn b. Ḥudhayfah, and he killed him. Then ʿAbs departed from ʿĀmir and alighted with Taym al-Ribāb, and Taym transgressed against them, and they fought a fierce battle, and Taym multiplied against them and inflicted a great slaughter on ʿAbs. Then ʿAbs departed, weary of war, with men and property diminished and the cattle perished. Qays said to them, 'What do you think?' They said, 'We shall return to our maternal uncles of Dhubyān, for death with them is better than remaining with others.' So they journeyed until they came at night to al-Ḥārith b. ʿAwf b. Abī Ḥārithah al-Murrī — and it is said, to Harim b. Sinān b. Abī Ḥārithah — and he was with Ḥiṣn b. Ḥudhayfah b. Badr. When he returned and saw them, he welcomed them and said, 'Who are the people?' They said, 'Your brothers, the Banū ʿAbs,' and they mentioned their need. He said, 'Yes, and with honour. I shall inform Ḥiṣn b. Ḥudhayfah.' So he went back to him and said, 'You have been come to by night for a need.' He said, 'I have granted it.' He said, 'The Banū ʿAbs; I found their delegation in my dwelling.' Ḥiṣn said, 'Make peace with your people. As for me, I shall not pay blood-money nor exact it. They have killed twenty of ʿAbs among my fathers and paternal uncles.' So he returned to ʿAbs and told them the words of Ḥiṣn, and he took them to him. When he saw them, Qays and al-Rabīʿ b. Ziyād said, 'We are riders of death.' He said, 'Rather, riders of peace. If you have inclined to your people, your people have inclined to you.' Then he went out with them until they came to Sinān and said to him, 'Arise for the affair of your clan and make peace between them, and I shall help you.' So he did that, and peace was completed between them, and ʿAbs returned. It is said that Qays b. Zuhayr did not march with ʿAbs to Dhubyān, and that he said, 'No Ghaṭafānite woman shall ever see me, for I have killed her brother or her husband or her son or her paternal cousin. But I shall repent to my Lord.' So he became a Christian and wandered the earth until he came to ʿUmān, where he became a monk for a time. Then Ḥawj b. Mālik al-ʿAbdī met him, recognised him, and killed him, saying, 'May God not have mercy on me if I have mercy on you.' It is said that Qays married among the Numayr b. Qāsiṭ when ʿAbs returned to Dhubyān, and a son named Faḍālah was born to him. Faḍālah came to the Prophet ﷺ, and the Prophet granted him a banner over those of his people who were with him; they were nine, and he was the tenth. Thus ended the war of Dāḥis and al-Ghabrāʾ, and praise be to God.
