✧ Account of the killing of Muḍarriṭ al-Ḥijārah He is ʿAmr b. al-Mundhir b. Māʾ al-Samāʾ al-Lakhmī, lord of al-Ḥīrah. He was nicknamed Muḍarriṭ al-Ḥijārah (“the one who makes stones fart”) because of the severity of his kingship and the strength of his governance. His mother was Hind bt. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAmr al-Maqṣūr b. Ākil al-Murār, and she was the paternal aunt of Imruʾ al-Qays b. Ḥujr b. al-Ḥārith. The reason for his killing was that one day he said to his boon companions: “Do you know of anyone among the Arabs of my kingdom who disdains that his mother should serve my mother?” They said: “We do not know of any except ʿAmr b. Kulthūm al-Taghlibī, for his mother is Laylā bt. Muhalhil b. Rabīʿah, her paternal uncle is Kulayb Wāʾil, her husband is Kulthūm, and her son is ʿAmr.” Muḍarriṭ al-Ḥijārah kept silent about what was in his heart, and he sent to ʿAmr b. Kulthūm inviting him to visit, and ordering that his mother Laylā should visit his own mother Hind bt. al-Ḥārith. ʿAmr b. Kulthūm arrived with horsemen of Banū Taghlib and with him his mother Laylā. He encamped on the bank of the Euphrates, and ʿAmr b. Hind learned of his arrival. He gave orders and his tents were pitched between al-Ḥīrah and the Euphrates. He sent for the notables of his kingdom, prepared food for them, then invited the people to it. The food was brought near to them at the entrance of the pavilion, and he sat with ʿAmr b. Kulthūm and his close companions inside the pavilion. His mother Hind had a dome at the side of the pavilion, and Laylā, the mother of ʿAmr b. Kulthūm, was with her in the dome. Muḍarriṭ al-Ḥijārah had said to his mother: “When the people have finished the food and only the dessert remains, send your servants away. When the dessert is brought, ask Laylā to serve you and tell her to hand you one thing after another.” Hind did what her son commanded her. When the dessert was called for, Hind said to Laylā: “Hand me this platter.” Laylā said: “Let the woman who needs it get up for her need.” But Hind insisted. Laylā cried out: “What humiliation! O Taghlib!” Her son ʿAmr b. Kulthūm heard her, and the blood rushed to his face while the people were drinking. ʿAmr b. Hind recognized the evil in his face, and Ibn Kulthūm sprang to the sword of Ibn Hind which was hanging in the pavilion—there was no other sword there—took it, struck the head of Muḍarriṭ al-Ḥijārah with it and killed him. He went out and called: “O Taghlib!” They plundered his wealth and his horses, took the women captive, and departed until they reached al-Ḥīrah. Afnūn al-Taghlibī said: “By your life, ʿAmr b. Hind was not successful when he called for Laylā to serve his mother; so Ibn Kulthūm rose to the sword unsheathed, and seized one of his drinking companions by the throat.”
