Translation

✧ The Day of ʿAyn Ubāgh It was between al-Mundhir b. Māʾ al-Samāʾ and al-Ḥārith al-Aʿraj b. Abī Shimr Jabalah, and it is said: Abū Shimr ʿAmr b. Jabalah b. al-Ḥārith b. Ḥujr b. al-Nuʿmān b. al-Ḥārith al-Ayham b. al-Ḥārith b. Māriyah al-Ghassānī, and other than that is said regarding his lineage, and it is said: he was an Azdī who prevailed over Ghassān, and the first is more common and more correct. He is the one who sought the coats of mail of Imruʾ al-Qays from al-Samawʾal b. ʿĀdiyāʾ and killed his son, and it is said someone else, and God knows best. The reason for that is that al-Mundhir b. Māʾ al-Samāʾ, king of the Arabs, marched from al-Ḥīrah with all of Maʿadd until he encamped at ʿAyn Ubāgh in Dhāt al-Khiyār, and he sent to al-Ḥārith al-Aʿraj b. Jabalah b. al-Ḥārith b. Thaʿlabah b. Jafnah b. ʿAmr Muzayqiyāʾ b. ʿĀmir al-Ghassānī, king of the Arabs in Syria: Either you give me the ransom so that I turn away from you with my armies, or you permit war. So al-Ḥārith sent to him: Grant us respite so that we may consider our affair. He gathered his forces and marched toward al-Mundhir and sent to him saying: We are two old men, so let us not destroy my armies and your armies; rather, let a man from my children come out and a man from your children come out, and whoever is killed, another shall come out in his place, and when our children are exhausted, I shall come out to you, and whoever kills his companion shall take the kingship. They made a pact upon that. Al-Mundhir then went to a man from among the brave of his companions and commanded him to come out and stand between the two ranks and to make it appear that he was the son of al-Mundhir. When he came out, al-Ḥārith sent out against him his son Abū Karib. When he faced him, he returned to his father and said: "This is not the son of al-Mundhir; he is only his slave or one of the brave of his companions." He said: "O my son, have you become afraid of death? The old man would not act treacherously." So he returned to him and fought him, and the horseman killed him and cast his head before al-Mundhir, and returned. Then al-Ḥārith commanded another son of his to fight him and seek vengeance for his brother, so he went out against him. When he confronted him, he returned to his father and said: "O father, by God, this is the slave of al-Mundhir." He said: "O my son, the old man would not act treacherously." So he returned to him and charged against him and killed him. When Shimr b. ʿAmr al-Ḥanafī saw that — and his mother was a Ghassānid, and he was with al-Mundhir — he said: "O king, treachery is not among the traits of kings or noble ones, and you have acted treacherously against your paternal cousin twice." Al-Mundhir became angry and ordered his expulsion, so he joined the army of al-Ḥārith and informed him. He said to him: "Ask your need." He said to him: "Your garb and your intimacy." When the next day came, al-Ḥārith arrayed his companions and incited them, and he was in forty thousand, and they formed ranks for battle, and they fought a fierce fight, and al-Mundhir was killed and his armies were defeated. Al-Ḥārith then commanded his two slain sons, so they were carried on a camel in the manner of two balanced loads, and he placed al-Mundhir above them both as a propitiation, and he said: "O what a topmost thing over the two balanced loads!" And it became a proverb. He marched to al-Ḥīrah and plundered it and burned it and buried his two sons there and built al-Ghariyyayn over them, according to the saying of some of them. On that day Ibn Abī al-Raʿlāʾ al-Ḍubyānī says: Just as we left at the spring, the spring of Ubāgh, kings and commoners alike, The clouds of death rained upon them in succession. Indeed, in death there is rest for the wretched. He who dies and finds rest is not dead; Indeed, the dead one is the dead among the living.
