Translation

✧ Account of the war between al-Ḥārith al-Aʿraj and Banū Taghlib Abū ʿUbaydah said: Bakr and Taghlib, the two sons of Wāʾil, gathered together to al-Mundhir b. Māʾ al-Samāʾ, and that was after their war. The one who made peace between them was Qays b. Sharāḥīl b. Murrah b. Hammām. Al-Mundhir raided with them Banū Ākil al-Murār, and he placed over Banū Bakr and Taghlib his son ʿAmr b. Hind, and said: "Raid your maternal uncles." So he raided them, and they fought, and Banū Ākil al-Murār were defeated and taken captive, and they were brought to al-Mundhir, and he killed them. Then Taghlib broke away from al-Mundhir and joined Syria, (and we shall mention the reason for that in the accounts of Shaybān, God willing), and war returned between them and Bakr. The king of Ghassān in Syria, who was al-Ḥārith b. Abī Shimr al-Ghassānī, went out, and he passed by groups of Taghlib, but they did not come out to meet him. ʿAmr b. Kulthūm al-Taghlibī rode and met him, and he said to him: "What prevented your people from coming out to meet me?" He said: "They did not know of your passing." He said: "If I return, I shall raid them with a raid that leaves them awake for my arrival." ʿAmr said: "A people never awaken except that their judgment becomes noble and their community mighty, so do not awaken their sleeping ones." He said: "It is as if you threaten me with them. By God, you will know when the nobles of Ghassān make the horses circle in your lands that the awake ones of your people will sleep a sleep with no dream in it; their roots will be cut off, and their remnants will be exiled to the dry, barren land and the distant, exhausted watering place." Then ʿAmr b. Kulthūm returned from him, gathered his people, and said: Indeed know, may you be denied the curse, that we refuse what you desire Learn that our burden is heavy And that the aftermath of our attack is severe And that there is no tribe of Maʿadd That can withstand us when iron is donned When al-Ḥārith al-Aʿraj returned, he raided Banū Taghlib, and they fought, and the fighting intensified between them. Then al-Ḥārith and Banū Ghassān were defeated, and the brother of al-Ḥārith was killed among a great number. ʿAmr b. Kulthūm said: Why did you not turn back to your brother when he called out in bereavement? Woe to your father, O son of Abī Shimr So taste what you have burdened yourself with, and acknowledge In it your brother and ʿĀmir b. Abī Ḥujr
