Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors

Translation

✧ [The war of Quṣayy against Khuzāʿah and Banū Bakr and the arbitration of Yaʿmur b. ʿAwf] At that point Khuzāʿah and Banū Bakr withdrew from Quṣayy, realizing that he would prevent them as he had prevented Ṣūfah, and that he would come between them and the Kaʿbah and the rule of Makkah. When they withdrew from him, he openly opposed them and resolved on war against them, and his brother Rizāḥ b. Rabīʿah stood firm with him, along with those of his people from Quḍāʿah who were with him. Khuzāʿah and Banū Bakr went out against him, and they met and fought a severe battle at al-Abṭaḥ, until the slain became numerous in both parties together. Then they called one another to a settlement and to appointing a man from the Arabs to arbitrate between them. So they appointed Yaʿmur b. ʿAwf b. Kaʿb b. ʿĀmir b. Layth b. Bakr b. ʿAbd Manāh b. Kinānah as arbiter. He judged between them that Quṣayy had a better right to the Kaʿbah and the rule of Makkah than Khuzāʿah, and that every life Quṣayy had taken from Khuzāʿah and Banū Bakr was remitted, to be crushed beneath his two feet, and that whatever Khuzāʿah and Banū Bakr had inflicted upon Quraysh, Kinānah, and Quḍāʿah was subject to blood-money to be paid, and that the way should be opened between Quṣayy and the Kaʿbah and Makkah. [The reason Yaʿmur was named al-Shaddākh] On that day Yaʿmur b. ʿAwf was named al-Shaddākh, because of the blood he crushed and remitted. Ibn Hishām said: It is also said: al-Shudākh.
