✧ [The Entry of Abrahah into Makkah, What Befell Him and His Elephant, and the Poetry of Nufayl Concerning That] When morning came, Abrahah prepared to enter Makkah. He readied his elephant and marshalled his army. The name of the elephant was Maḥmūd, and Abrahah was resolved to destroy the House and then return to Yemen. When they directed the elephant toward Makkah, Nufayl b. Ḥabīb al-Khathʿamī came forward until he stood beside the elephant. Then he took hold of its ear and said: "Kneel, Maḥmūd, or turn back safely to where you came from, for you are in Allah's sacred land." Then he released its ear. The elephant knelt, and Nufayl b. Ḥabīb went off running until he climbed up the mountain. They beat the elephant to make it rise, but it refused. They struck its head with battle-axes to make it rise, but it refused. They inserted hooks of theirs into its flanks and prodded it with them to make it rise, but it refused. They turned it back toward Yemen, and it rose and trotted. They turned it toward Syria, and it did the same. They turned it toward the east, and it did the same. They turned it toward Makkah, and it knelt. Allah, Exalted be He, sent against them birds from the sea, like swifts and starlings. Each bird carried three stones: a stone in its beak and two stones in its feet, like chickpeas and lentils. None of them was struck except he perished, though not all of them were struck. They fled, racing to the road by which they had come, asking about Nufayl b. Ḥabīb to guide them to the road to Yemen. Nufayl said, when he saw what Allah had sent down upon them of His vengeance: Where is the escape when the God is the pursuer, and al-Ashram is the vanquished, not the victor? Ibn Hishām said: The phrase "not the victor" is not from Ibn Isḥāq. Ibn Isḥāq said: Nufayl also said: Greetings to you from us, O Rudaynah; we granted you in the morning a pleasant life. A scout came to us from you at night, but no welcome was prepared for your scout among us. Rudaynah, had you seen—though you will not see it— what we saw beside al-Muḥaṣṣab, you would have excused me and praised my affair, and would not have grieved over what passed between us. I praised Allah when I saw birds, and feared stones that would be cast upon us. And all the people ask about Nufayl, as if I owed a debt to the Abyssinians. They went out falling down on every road, perishing at every place of destruction and at every watering place. Abrahah was struck in his body, and they carried him away with them, his fingertips falling off finger by finger. Each time a fingertip fell, a discharge of pus and blood followed it, until they brought him to Ṣanʿāʾ and he was like a young bird. He did not die, it is claimed, until his chest split open from his heart. Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaʿqūb b. ʿUtbah related to me that he was told that the first time measles and smallpox were seen in the land of the Arabs was that year, and the first time the bitter plants of ḥarmal, ḥanẓal, and ʿushar were seen there was that year.
