Translation
✧ [ Ḥunāṭah and ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ] Abrahah sent Ḥunāṭah al-Ḥimyarī to Makkah and said to him: Ask about the chief of the people of this town and its nobleman, then say to him: The king says to you: I have not come to fight you; I have come only to demolish this House. If you do not oppose me by war, then I have no need of your blood. If he does not desire war with me, then bring him to me. When Ḥunāṭah entered Makkah, he asked about the chief of Quraysh and its nobleman, and he was told: ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Hāshim b. ʿAbd Manāf b. Quṣayy. So he came to him and said to him what Abrahah had commanded him. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib said to him: By God, we do not desire war with him, and we have no strength for that. This is the Sacred House of God and the House of His friend Ibrāhīm ﷺ — or as he said — if He protects it from him, then it is His House and His sanctuary; but if He leaves the way open between him and it, then by God, we have no means to defend it. Ḥunāṭah said to him: Then come with me to him, for he has commanded me to bring you to him.
