Translation
✧ [Dhu Nafr and Unays and their intercession for ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib before Abrahah] Then ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib set out with him, accompanied by some of his sons, until he came to the army. He asked about Dhu Nafr, and he was a friend of his, until he entered upon him while he was in his prison. He said to him: “O Dhu Nafr, do you have any means to help us in what has befallen us?” Dhu Nafr said to him: “What help can a man who is a prisoner in the hands of a king, waiting to be killed morning or evening, offer? I have no help in anything that has befallen you, except that Unays, the elephant keeper, is a friend of mine. I shall send to him, commend you to him, stress your right upon him, and ask him to seek permission for you to see the king, so that you may speak to him about whatever you wish, and he may intercede for you with him for good if he is able to do so.” He said: “That is enough for me.” So Dhu Nafr sent to Unays and said to him: “ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib is the chief of Quraysh and the owner of the caravan of Makkah. He feeds people in the plain and wild beasts on the mountaintops. The king has seized two hundred camels of his. Seek permission for him to enter upon him, and help him with him as much as you can.” He said: “I shall do so.” Then Unays spoke to Abrahah and said to him: “O king, this is the chief of Quraysh at your door, seeking permission to enter upon you. He is the owner of the caravan of Makkah, and he feeds people in the plain and wild beasts on the mountaintops. Grant him permission to enter upon you, that he may speak to you about his need, and treat him well.” He said: So Abrahah granted him permission.
