Translation
✧ Abraha al-Ashram gained mastery over the affairs of al-Yaman and killed Aryāṭ. [What occurred between Aryāṭ and Abraha] Ibn Isḥāq said: Aryāṭ remained in the land of al-Yaman for years in that authority of his. Then Abraha al-Ḥabashī disputed with him over the command of the Abyssinians in al-Yaman — he was among his troops — until the Abyssinians split over the two of them, and a faction of them sided with each one. Then one of them marched against the other. When the people drew near, Abraha sent to Aryāṭ: “You will accomplish nothing by having the Abyssinians meet one another until you destroy them. Come out to me and I will come out to you; whichever of us strikes his companion, his troops will turn to him.” Aryāṭ sent back to him: “You have been fair.” So Abraha went out to him. He was a short man, fleshy and stout, and he was a man of religion in Christianity. Aryāṭ went out to him, and he was a handsome, imposing, tall man, with a spear of his in his hand. Behind Abraha stood a servant of his called ʿAtawdah, protecting his back. Aryāṭ raised the spear and struck at Abraha, aiming for the top of his head, but the spear fell on Abraha's forehead and split his eyebrow, his nose, his eye, and his lip. For that reason he was called Abraha al-Ashram. Then ʿAtawdah charged at Aryāṭ from behind Abraha and killed him. Aryāṭ's troops turned to Abraha, and the Abyssinians in al-Yaman gathered around him. Abraha paid the blood-money for Aryāṭ.
