Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors
[ مَقْتَلُ ابْنِ الثَّامِرِ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَيُقَالُ: كَانَ فِيمَنْ قَتَلَ ذُو نُوَاسٍ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الثَّامِرِ، رَأْسُهُمْ وَإِمَامُهُمْ. [ مَا يُرْوَى عَنْ ابْنِ الثَّامِرِ فِي قَبْرِهِ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ حَزْمٍ أَنَّهُ حُدِّثَ: أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَهْلِ نَجْرَانَ كَانَ فِي زَمَانِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ حَفَرَ خَرِبَةً مِنْ خَرِبِ نَجْرَانَ لِبَعْضِ حَاجَتِهِ، فَوَجَدُوا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ الثَّامِرِ تَحْتَ دَفْنٍ مِنْهَا قَاعِدًا، وَاضِعًا يَدَهُ عَلَى ضَرْبَةٍ فِي رَأْسِهِ مُمْسِكًا بِيَدِهِ عَلَيْهَا فَإِذَا أُخِّرَتْ يَدُهُ عَنْهَا تَنْبَعِثُ دَمًا، وَإِذَا أُرْسِلَتْ يَدُهُ رَدَّهَا عَلَيْهَا، فَأَمْسَكَتْ دَمُهَا، وَفِي يَدِهِ خَاتَمٌ مَكْتُوبٌ فِيهِ: رَبِّي اللَّهُ فَكُتِبَ فِيهِ إلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ يُخْبَرُ بِأَمْرِهِ فَكَتَبَ إلَيْهِمْ عُمَرُ ؓ: أَنْ أَقِرُّوهُ عَلَى حَالِهِ، وَرُدُّوا عَلَيْهِ الدَّفْنَ الَّذِي كَانَ عَلَيْهِ، فَفَعَلُوا.
Translation
✧ [ The Killing of Ibn al-Thāmir ] Ibn Isḥāq said: It is said that among those whom Dhū Nuwās killed was ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Thāmir, their head and their leader. [ What is related from Ibn al-Thāmir in his grave ] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. Ḥazm related to me that he was told: A man from the people of Najrān, in the time of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ, dug up a ruin from among the ruins of Najrān for some need of his, and they found ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Thāmir seated beneath a burial place in it, placing his hand upon a wound in his head, holding it with his hand. When his hand was removed from it, blood flowed; when his hand was released, he returned it to it, and the bleeding stopped. In his hand was a ring inscribed: My Lord is God. It was written to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, informing him of his affair. ʿUmar ؓ wrote to them: Leave him in his state, and return the burial that was upon him. And they did so.
