Translation

✧ [ Dhū Nuwās and the digging of the trench ] So Dhū Nuwās marched against them with his troops and called them to Judaism, giving them the choice between that and death. They chose death. He dug for them the trench, and burned with fire those whom he burned, killed with the sword, and mutilated, until he killed nearly twenty thousand of them. Concerning Dhū Nuwās and his troops, God, exalted be He, revealed to His Messenger, our master Muhammad ﷺ: "Slain were the companions of the trench, the fire abounding in fuel, when they sat over it and were witnesses of what they did to the believers. And they took vengeance on them only because they believed in God, the Mighty, the Praiseworthy." [ Al-ukhdūd linguistically ] Ibn Hishām said: Al-ukhdūd is the elongated excavation in the ground, like a trench, a watercourse, or the like; its plural is akhādīd. Dhū al-Rummah, whose name is Ghaylān b. ʿUqbah, one of the Banū ʿAdī b. ʿAbd Manāf b. Udd b. Ṭānijah b. Ilyās b. Muḍar, said: Of the Iraqi she-camels, for which there stretches between the desert and the palm trees a trench—meaning a watercourse. This verse is from a poem of his. He said: The mark of a sword or knife on leather, and the mark of a whip or the like, is called ukhdūd, and its plural is akhādīd.
