Translation
✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: And Tubbān Asʿad Abū Karib is the one who came to al-Madīnah, and drove the two Jewish rabbis to Yemen, and rebuilt the Sacred House and clothed it. His reign was before the reign of Rabīʿah b. Naṣr. He had made his route, when he returned from raiding the lands of the east, pass by al-Madīnah. He had passed by it at the beginning of his journey without provoking its people, and had left among them a son of his who was killed treacherously. So he came to it resolved to destroy it, to exterminate its people, and to cut down its palm trees. This clan of the Anṣār gathered against him, their chief being ʿAmr b. Ṭallah, the brother of the Banū al-Najjār, then one of the Banū ʿAmr b. Mabdhūl. The name of Mabdhūl is ʿĀmir b. Mālik b. al-Najjār, and the name of al-Najjār is Taym Allāh b. Thaʿlabah b. ʿAmr b. al-Khazraj b. Ḥārithah b. Thaʿlabah b. ʿAmr b. ʿĀmir. Ibn Hishām said: ʿAmr b. Ṭalḥah is ʿAmr b. Muʿāwiyah b. ʿAmr b. ʿĀmir b. Mālik b. al-Najjār, and Ṭallah is his mother, and she is the daughter of ʿĀmir b. Zurayq al-Khazrajiyyah. Ibn Isḥāq said: And there was a man from the Banū ʿAdī b. al-Najjār called Aḥmar. He attacked a man from the companions of Tubbaʿ whom he found cutting a bunch of dates for himself, and struck him with his sickle and killed him, saying: "Dates belong only to the one who pollinates them." That increased Tubbaʿ's anger against them. So they fought. The Anṣār claim that they used to fight him by day and host him by night, and that pleased him, and he would say: "By God, our people are indeed noble." Ibn Isḥāq related from the Anṣār that Tubbaʿ's anger was only against the Jews because they prevented them from him. Al-Suhaylī said: It is said that he came only to support the Anṣār—the sons of his paternal uncle—against the Jews who had settled among them in al-Madīnah under conditions which they did not fulfill, and who behaved arrogantly toward them. And God knows best.
