Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors

Translation

✧ Ibn Isḥāq said: Then ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib departed, taking his son ʿAbd Allāh by the hand, and passed by—so they claim—a woman of the Banū Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. Quṣayy, namely Umm Qannāl, the sister of Waraqah b. Nawfal b. Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. Quṣayy. She was at the Kaʿbah and looked at his face and said: "Where are you going, O ʿAbd Allāh?" He said: "With my father." She said: "You may have the like of the camels that were slaughtered for you if you have intercourse with me right now." He said: "I am with my father, and I cannot oppose him or part from him." Then he went out with him until he came to Wahb b. ʿAbd Manāf and married him to his daughter. Then he departed from her and came to the woman who had made him the offer she made and said to her: "Why do you not offer me today what you offered me yesterday?" She said to him: "The light that was with you yesterday has left you, so I have no need of you today." She had heard from her brother Waraqah b. Nawfal—who had become a Christian and followed the scriptures—that there would be a prophet among this nation, and she hoped that he would be from her. But God Almighty placed him in the noblest stock, the most generous origin, and the purest root, as God Almighty said—God knows best where He places His message [al-Anʿām: 124]. We shall mention the birth in detail. Among what Umm Qannāl bt. Nawfal said in poetry, lamenting what had escaped her of the matter she sought, as narrated by al-Bayhaqī from the route of Yūnus b. Bukayr from Muḥammad b. Isḥāq, may God have mercy on him: Upon you be the family of Zuhrah wherever they are, And Āminah who carried a boy. You see the Mahdī when he mounted her, And a light that preceded him before him. Until she said: All creation hopes for him altogether; He will lead the people, rightly guided, an imam. God fashioned him from pure light, And his light removed from us the darkness. That is the work of your Lord when He granted it to him, Whether he travels one day or stays. He will guide the people of Makkah after disbelief, And will impose after that the fast. Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. Sahl al-Kharāʾiṭī said: ʿAlī b. Ḥarb narrated to us, Muḥammad b. ʿUmārah al-Qurashī narrated to us, Muslim b. Khālid al-Zanjī narrated to us, Ibn Jurayj narrated to us from ʿAṭāʾ b. Abī Rabāḥ from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: When ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib departed with his son ʿAbd Allāh to marry him off, he passed by a Jewish female soothsayer from the people of Tabālah who had read the scriptures, called Fāṭimah bt. Murr al-Khathʿamiyyah. She saw the light of prophethood in the face of ʿAbd Allāh and said: "O young man, would you have intercourse with me right now, and I will give you a hundred camels?" ʿAbd Allāh said: As for the forbidden, death is before it; And what is lawful is not lawful for me that I should seek it clearly. So how can I pursue the matter you desire? The noble man protects his honor and his religion. Then he went on with his father, and he married him to Āminah bt. Wahb b. ʿAbd Manāf b. Zuhrah. He stayed with her for three days. Then his soul called him to what the soothsayer had called him to, and he came to her. She said: "What did you do after me?" He told her. She said: "By God, I am not a woman of suspicion, but I saw a light in your face, and I wanted it to be in me. But God refused except to place it where He willed." Then Fāṭimah began to say: I saw a cloud that flashed lightning, And it gleamed with the heavy drops of rain. I touched it as a light that illuminated for him What was around him like the illumination of the full moon. And I hoped for it as a glory I would attain; Not every striker of a firestick makes it kindle. By God, a Zuhriyyah woman has taken Your two garments, though she did not steal and does not know. Fāṭimah also said: O Banū Hāshim, Āminah has left from your brother A loss when the two desires grapple for intercourse, Just as a lamp leaves, when it is extinguished, Wicks that have been soaked in oil. Not everything a young man possesses of his inherited wealth Comes by determination, nor does what he misses come from slackness. So be gracious when you seek a matter, for indeed Two striving forces will suffice you, locked in struggle. Either a clenched hand will suffice you, Or a hand extended with fingers. When Āminah took from him what she took, She took from him a glory that has no second.
