Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors
Translation
✧ [The Arrow Falling against ʿAbd Allāh, His Father Undertaking to Sacrifice Him, and the Quraysh Preventing Him] Ibn Isḥāq said: And ʿAbd Allāh was—as they claim—the dearest of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib's children to him, so ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib believed that if the arrow missed him, then it had spared him. And he is the father of the Messenger of God ﷺ. So when the keeper of the arrows took the arrows to cast them, ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib stood before Hubal calling upon God, then the keeper of the arrows cast them, and the arrow came out against ʿAbd Allāh. So ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib took him by the hand, took the knife, then came with him to Isāf and Nāʾilah to sacrifice him. Then the Quraysh rose to him from their assemblies and said: What do you intend, O ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib? He said: I will sacrifice him. So the Quraysh and his sons said to him: By God, you shall never sacrifice him until you have an excuse for it. If you do this, a man will not cease to come with his son until he sacrifices him, so what survival of people is there upon this? And al-Mughīrah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. Makhzūm b. Yaqaẓah said to him—and ʿAbd Allāh was the son of the sister of the people—: By God, you shall never sacrifice him until you have an excuse for it. If his ransom is with our wealth, we will ransom him. And the Quraysh and his sons said to him: Do not do it, and take him to the Ḥijāz, for there is a diviner there who has a familiar spirit; ask her, then you are at the head of your affair. If she commands you to sacrifice him, you will sacrifice him; and if she commands you with something in which there is relief for you and for him, you will accept it.
