Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors
قِصَّةُ عَمْرِو بْنِ لُحَيٍّ وَذِكْرُ أَصْنَامِ الْعَرَبِ [ رَآهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَجُرُّ قَصَبَهُ فِي النَّارِ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَحَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ حَزْمٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: حُدِّثْتُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ عَمْرَو بْنَ لُحَيٍّ يَجُرُّ قُصْبَهُ فِي النَّارِ، فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَمَّنْ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُ مِنْ النَّاسِ، فَقَالَ: هَلَكُوا قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَحَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ التَّيْمِيُّ أَنَّ أَبَا صَالِحٍ السَّمَّانَ حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ - قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: وَاسْمُ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ: عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَامِرٍ، وَيُقَالُ اسْمُهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ صَخْرٍ - يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ لِأَكْثَمَ بْنِ الْجَوْنِ الْخُزَاعِيِّ: يَا أَكْثَمُ، رَأَيْتُ عَمْرَو بْنَ لُحَيِّ بْنِ قَمَعَةَ بْنِ خِنْدِفَ يَجُرُّ قُصْبَهُ فِي النَّارِ، فَمَا رَأَيْتُ رَجُلًا أَشْبَهَ بِرَجُلٍ مِنْكَ بِهِ، وَلَا بِكَ مِنْهُ: فَقَالَ أَكْثَمُ: عَسَى أَنْ يَضُرَّنِي شَبَهُهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ؟ قَالَ: لَا، إنَّكَ مُؤْمِنٌ وَهُوَ كَافِرٌ، إنَّهُ كَانَ أَوَّلَ مَنْ غَيَّرَ دِينَ إسْمَاعِيلَ، فَنَصَبَ الْأَوْثَانَ، وَبَحَرَ الْبَحِيرَةَ، وَسَيَّبَ السَّائِبَةَ، وَوَصَلَ الْوَصِيلَةَ، وَحَمَى الْحَامِي.
Translation
✧ The story of ʿAmr b. Luḥayy and mention of the idols of the Arabs [The Prophet ﷺ saw him dragging his entrails in the Fire] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. Ḥazm narrated to me from his father, who said: I was told that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: “I saw ʿAmr b. Luḥayy dragging his entrails in the Fire, so I asked him about the people between me and him, and he said: ‘They have perished.’” Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥārith al-Taymī narrated to me that Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Sammān narrated to him that he heard Abū Hurayrah — Ibn Hishām said: Abū Hurayrah’s name is ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĀmir, and it is also said his name is ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ṣakhr — say: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say to Aktham b. al-Jawn al-Khuzāʿī: “O Aktham, I saw ʿAmr b. Luḥayy b. Qamaʿah b. Khindif dragging his entrails in the Fire, and I have not seen any man more resembling another than you to him, nor him to you.” Aktham said: “May his resemblance harm me, O Messenger of God?” He said: “No, you are a believer and he is an unbeliever. He was the first to change the religion of Ismāʿīl: he set up idols, slit the ears of the baḥīrah, let loose the sāʾibah, joined the waṣīlah, and protected the ḥāmī.”
