Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors
قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ حَدَّثَنِي بَعْضُ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ أَنَّ عَمْرَو بْنَ لُحَيٍّ خَرَجَ مِنْ مَكَّةَ إِلَى الشَّامِ فِي بَعْضِ أُمُورِهِ فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ مَآبَ مِنْ أَرْضِ الْبَلْقَاءِ، وَبِهَا يَوْمَئِذٍ الْعَمَالِيقُ، وَهُمْ وَلَدُ عِمْلَاقٍ وَيُقَالُ وَلَدُ عَمْلِيقِ بْنِ لَاوَذَ بْنِ سَامِ بْنِ نُوحٍ رَآهُمْ يَعْبُدُونَ الْأَصْنَامَ فَقَالَ لَهُمْ مَا هَذِهِ الْأَصْنَامُ الَّتِي أَرَاكُمْ تَعْبُدُونَ ؟ قَالُوا لَهُ: هَذِهِ أَصْنَامٌ نَعْبُدُهَا فَنَسْتَمْطِرُهَا فَتُمْطِرُنَا وَنَسْتَنْصِرُهَا فَتَنْصُرُنَا فَقَالَ لَهُمْ: أَلَا تُعْطُونِي مِنْهَا صَنَمًا فَأَسِيرُ بِهِ إِلَى أَرْضِ الْعَرَبِ فَيَعْبُدُوهُ ؟ فَأَعْطَوْهُ صَنَمًا يُقَالَ لَهُ: هُبَلُ فَقَدِمَ بِهِ مَكَّةَ فَنَصَبَهُ، وَأَمَرَ النَّاسَ بِعِبَادَتِهِ وَتَعْظِيمِهِ.
Translation
✧ Ibn Hishām said: One of the people of knowledge related to me that ʿAmr b. Luḥayy went out from Makkah to Syria on some of his affairs. When he reached Maʾāb in the land of al-Balqāʾ — where at that time the ʿAmālīq were, and they are the children of ʿImlāq, or it is said the children of ʿAmlīq b. Lāwadh b. Sām b. Nūḥ — he saw them worshipping idols. He said to them, “What are these idols which I see you worshipping?” They said to him, “These are idols that we worship: we ask them for rain and they give us rain, and we seek their aid and they aid us.” He said to them, “Will you not give me one of these idols so that I may take it to the land of the Arabs and they may worship it?” So they gave him an idol called Hubal. He brought it to Makkah, set it up, and commanded the people to worship it and revere it.
