Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors

Translation

✧ [The Genealogy of Juʿthumah] Ibn Hishām said: It is also said: Juʿthumah al-Asad, and Juʿthumah al-Azd. He is Juʿthumah b. Yashkur b. Mubashshir b. Ṣaʿb b. Duhmān b. Naṣr b. Zahrān b. al-Ḥārith b. Kaʿb b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Mālik b. Naṣr b. al-Asad b. al-Ghawth. And it is said: Juʿthumah b. Yashkur b. Mubashshir b. Ṣaʿb b. Naṣr b. Zahrān b. al-Asad b. al-Ghawth. They were named al-Jadarah only because ʿĀmir b. ʿAmr b. Juʿthumah married the daughter of al-Ḥārith b. Muḍāḍ al-Jurhumī, and Jurhum were the custodians of the Kaʿbah. He built a wall (jidār) for the Kaʿbah, so ʿĀmir was named al-Jādir because of that. Thus his descendants were called al-Jadarah for that reason. Ibn Isḥāq said: Concerning Saʿd b. Sayal, the poet says: What we see among people is not a single person whom we know to be like Saʿd b. Sayal — a horseman, firm-gripped, in whom there is difficulty, and when he faces the adversary, he dismounts — a horseman who lures the horses gradually, just as the free falcon, the qaṭāmī, lures the sandgrouse. Ibn Hishām said: His saying, 'just as the free falcon lures,' is according to some of the people of knowledge in poetry.
