Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors
Translation
✧ Ibn Nizār Nizār, with kasrah on the nūn and tashdīd omitted on the zāy. Abū al-Faraj al-Umawī said: It is derived from al-tanazzur because he was the unique one of his age. Al-Suhaylī said: From al-nazr, meaning the little, because when his father had him and looked at the light between his eyes — the light of prophethood that was transferred through the loins — he rejoiced greatly, slaughtered and fed much, and said: “This is a small trifle in the right of this newborn.” So he was named Nizār for that. The Imām Abū al-Ḥasan al-Māwardī, may God Almighty have mercy on him, said in his book “Aʿlām al-Nubuwwah”: Nizār’s name was Khildān, and he was a leader, and fortune smiled upon him before kings, but his body was thin. The king of the Persians said to him: “What is the matter with you, O Nizār?” He said: Its interpretation in the Persian language is “O thin one.” So this name prevailed over him. The erudite scholar al-Muḥibb b. Shihāb al-Dīn b. al-Hāʾim said: This is very strange. It is also said: He was given the kunyah Abū Iyād, and it is said: Abū Rabīʿah. His mother was Muʿānah bt. Jawsham b. Julhumah b. ʿAmr b. Jurhum. His full brothers were: Qanaṣ, Qannāṣah, Sanām, Jandah, Junād, Junādah, al-Qaḥm, ʿUbayd al-Rammāḥ, al-Gharf, al-ʿAwf, Shakk, and Quḍāʿah — by whom Maʿadd was given his kunyah — and a number who died young.
