Then the year 379 AH began
ثُمَّ دَخَلَتْ سَنَةُ تِسْعٍ وَسَبْعِينَ وَثَلَاثِمِائَةٍ ذِكْرُ سَمْلِ صَمْصَامِ الدَّوْلَةِ كَانَ نِحْرِيرٌ الْخَادِمُ يُشِيرُ عَلَى شَرَفِ الدَّوْلَةِ بِقَتْلِ أَخِيهِ صَمْصَامِ الدَّوْلَةِ، وَشَرَفُ الدَّوْلَةِ يُعْرِضُ عَنْ كَلَامِهِ، فَلَمَّا اعْتَلَّ شَرَفُ الدَّوْلَةِ وَاشْتَدَّتْ عِلَّتُهُ أَلَحَّ عَلَيْهِ نِحْرِيرٌ وَقَالَ لَهُ: ( الدَّوْلَةُ مَعَهُ عَلَى خَطَرٍ )، فَإِنْ لَمْ تَقْتُلْهُ فَاسْمُلْهُ. فَأَرْسَلَ فِي ذَلِكَ مُحَمَّدًا الشِّيرَازِيَّ الْفَرَّاشَ، فَمَاتَ شَرَفُ الدَّوْلَةِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَصِلَ الْفَرَّاشُ إِلَى صَمْصَامِ الدَّوْلَةِ، فَلَمَّا وَصَلَ الْفَرَّاشُ إِلَى الْقَلْعَةِ الَّتِي بِهَا صَمْصَامُ الدَّوْلَةِ لَمْ يُقْدِمْ عَلَى سَمْلِهِ، فَاسْتَشَارَ أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ الْعَلَاءَ بْنَ الْحَسَنِ النَّاظِرَ هُنَاكَ، فَأَشَارَ بِذَلِكَ، فَسَمَلَهُ. وَكَانَ صَمْصَامُ الدَّوْلَةِ يَقُولُ: مَا أَعْمَانِي إِلَّا الْعَلَاءُ لِأَنَّهُ أَمْضَى فِي حُكْمِ سُلْطَانٍ قَدْ مَاتَ.
Translation
✧ Then the year 379 AH began. Mention of the blinding of Ṣamṣām al-Dawlah. Niḥrīr the servant used to advise Sharaf al-Dawlah to kill his brother Ṣamṣām al-Dawlah, but Sharaf al-Dawlah turned away from his words. When Sharaf al-Dawlah fell ill and his illness became severe, Niḥrīr pressed him and said to him: "The state is in danger with him; if you do not kill him, then blind him." So he sent Muḥammad al-Shīrāzī the bedding servant concerning that. Sharaf al-Dawlah died before the bedding servant reached Ṣamṣām al-Dawlah. When the bedding servant reached the fortress where Ṣamṣām al-Dawlah was, he did not proceed to blind him. He consulted Abū al-Qāsim al-ʿAlāʾ b. al-Ḥasan, the inspector there, and he advised that. So he blinded him. Ṣamṣām al-Dawlah used to say: "None blinded me but al-ʿAlāʾ, for he executed the command of a sultan who had already died."
