✧ Mention of Sharaf al-Dawla’s taking possession of al-Ahwāz In this year, Sharaf al-Dawla Abū al-Fawāris b. ʿAḍud al-Dawla marched from Fārs seeking al-Ahwāz. He sent to his brother Abū al-Ḥusayn, who was there, to reassure him and promise him kindness, and that he would confirm him in the offices he held, and he informed him that his aim was Iraq and the deliverance of his brother the amir Abū Naṣr from his prison. But Abū al-Ḥusayn paid no heed to his words, resolved to prevent him, and prepared for that. Then news reached him that Sharaf al-Dawla had arrived at Arrajān, then at Rāmahurmuz. His troops slipped away to Sharaf al-Dawla and proclaimed his slogan. So Abū al-Ḥusayn fled toward al-Rayy to his uncle Fakhr al-Dawla. He reached Iṣbahān and stayed there, seeking his uncle’s aid. His uncle released money to him and promised him support. When the matter dragged on for him, he sought to seize Iṣbahān and proclaimed the slogan of his brother Sharaf al-Dawla. The troops there rose against him, took him captive, and sent him to al-Rayy, where his uncle imprisoned him. He remained imprisoned until his uncle Fakhr al-Dawla fell mortally ill. When his illness grew severe, he sent someone who killed him. He used to compose poetry, and among his verses are: Grant that time has pleased me, that its turns have satisfied me, that it has brought good in return, and released me from captivity— then who will restore to me the days of youth that have passed, and who will restore what I missed in prison of my life? As for Sharaf al-Dawla, he marched to al-Ahwāz and took possession of it. He sent to al-Baṣra and took possession of it, and he seized his brother Abū Ṭāhir. The news reached Ṣamṣām al-Dawla, who corresponded with him about peace. The matter was settled on the terms that Sharaf al-Dawla would be mentioned in the khuṭba in Iraq before Ṣamṣām al-Dawla, that Ṣamṣām al-Dawla would be his deputy, and that he would release his brother the amir Bahāʾ al-Dawla Abū Naṣr. So he released him and sent him to him, and the situation was set right and became stable. Sharaf al-Dawla’s commanders favored peace because they wanted to return to their homelands. The khuṭba was made for Sharaf al-Dawla in Iraq, and robes of honor and titles were sent to him from al-Ṭāʾiʿ li-llāh. But before the envoys returned to Sharaf al-Dawla to administer his oath, the lands cast their keys to him, such as Wāsiṭ and others, and the commanders wrote to him offering obedience. So he turned away from the peace and resolved to march on Baghdād and seize the kingdom, and he did not swear an oath to his brother. With him was the sharīf Abū al-Ḥasan Muḥammad b. ʿUmar, who advised him to aim for Iraq, urged him to it, and made him covet it, and he agreed with him on that. We shall mention the rest of his account in the year three hundred and seventy-six, God Almighty willing.
