✧ Mention of Abū al-ʿAbbās’s defeat and retreat to Jurjān and his death When Ibn Sīmjūr was defeated, Abū al-ʿAbbās stayed in Naysābūr, seeking to win the favor of the amīr Nūḥ and his vizier Ibn ʿUzayr, and he refrained from pursuing Ibn Sīmjūr and expelling him from Khurāsān. So Ibn Sīmjūr’s defeated companions returned to him, his strength was restored, reinforcements came to him from Bukhārā, and he wrote to Sharaf al-Dawlah Abū al-Fawāris b. ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, who was in Fārs, requesting support. He sent him two thousand horsemen, in defiance of his uncle Fakhr al-Dawlah. When his forces became numerous, he marched against Abū al-ʿAbbās. They met and fought fiercely until the end of the day, and Abū al-ʿAbbās and his companions were defeated, and many of them were taken prisoner. Abū al-ʿAbbās headed for Jurjān, where Fakhr al-Dawlah was. He honored and esteemed him, and left Jurjān, Dihistān, and Astarābādh solely to him and his followers. He departed from there to al-Rayy and sent him such sums of money and supplies as defy description. Abū al-ʿAbbās and his companions remained in Jurjān. He gathered armies and marched toward Khurāsān, but did not reach it. He returned to Jurjān and stayed there for three years. Then a severe plague struck the city, in which many of his companions died, and then he too died. His death was in the year 377 [AH], and it is said that he died of poison. His companions had behaved badly toward the people of Jurjān, so when he died, the inhabitants rose against them and plundered them. A great battle took place between them, which ended in the defeat of the Jurjānīs. Many of them were killed, their houses were burned, and their property was plundered. Their elders sought quarter, and the attackers desisted from them. His companions dispersed, and most of them went to Khurāsān and joined Abū ʿAlī b. Abī al-Ḥasan b. Sīmjūr, who was then the commander of the army in place of his father. His father had died suddenly while he was having intercourse with one of his concubines, and he died on her breast. When he died, his son Abū ʿAlī took charge after him, and his brothers agreed to obey him, including his brother Abū al-Qāsim and others. Fāʾiq disputed the governorship with him, and we shall mention that in the year 383 [AH], when the Turks took possession of Bukhārā, if God Almighty wills.
