Translation

✧ ibn Mālik Mālik: an active participle from malaka, yamliku, so he is mālik. Its plural is mullāk and mulk. His kunyah is Abū al-Ḥārith, and his mother is ʿĀtikah bt. ʿAdwān, who is al-Ḥārith b. Qays ʿAylān, and her nickname was ʿIkrisah, and it is said otherwise. It is said: al-Naḍr b. Kinānah's name was Quraysh. It is said: when Quṣayy gathered them, they were called Quraysh, and taqarrush means gathering together. It is said: when Quṣayy owned the sanctuary and performed beautiful deeds, he was called al-Qurashī, and he was the first to be named that, and it is also from coming together, meaning because of the gathering of good qualities in him. Many statements have been made about the naming of Quraysh that there is no need to mention. Quṣayy was the first to introduce kindling the fire at al-Muzdalifah, and it was kindled in the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ and after him.
