Translation

✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year. Abū Bakr al-Khutullī Aḥmad b. Jaʿfar b. Muslim b. Rāshid, Abū Bakr al-Khutullī. He was born in the year 278 AH. He heard Abū Muslim al-Kajjī, ʿAbdallāh b. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, and many others. He wrote a great deal on Qurʾānic exegesis and readings. He was righteous, devout, prolific, trustworthy, and reliable. Al-Dāraquṭnī wrote from him, and Ibn Rizqawayh, al-Barqānī, and Abū Nuʿaym [al-Aṣbahānī] narrated from him. Abū al-Qāsim al-Ḥusayn b. Aḥmad b. ʿUthmān b. Shīṭā said: We came to Abū Bakr b. Muslim to greet him, and someone present said to him, "May God preserve you." He replied, "I do not love remaining, for for a year I have not attended Friday prayer, and this entire summer I have not slept at night on the roof, and for a month I have not eaten bread, but only swallow crumbs. I do not love life while this is my state." He said: We left him, and he did not tarry long before he died. He died in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of this year and was buried in the Khayzurān cemetery next to Ibn al-Munādī. Abū ʿAlī al-Māsarjasī al-Ḥāfiẓ Al-Ḥusayn b. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad, Abū ʿAlī al-Māsarjasī al-Ḥāfiẓ. He traveled, heard, and wrote much; in his household and among his predecessors were more than ten traditionists. He compiled the large Musnad in 1,300 parts, refined with its defects, and collected the ḥadīth of al-Zuhrī in a collection unprecedented. He compiled Maghāzī, Qabāʾil, and many shaykhs and chapters, and produced extracts on the books of Bukhārī and Muslim. He was reliable. He died on Tuesday, the ninth of Rajab of this year. ʿAbdallāh b. ʿAdī ʿAbdallāh b. ʿAdī b. ʿAbdallāh b. Muḥammad b. Abī Aḥmad al-Jurjānī al-Ḥāfiẓ. He was born on Saturday, the first of Dhū al-Qaʿdah in the year 277 AH, the year in which Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī died. Abū Aḥmad was a scholar of ḥadīth, at the utmost in it. He has the book "al-Kāmil fī al-Jarḥ wa-al-Taʿdīl." Ḥamzah al-Sahmī said: I asked al-Dāraquṭnī to compile a work on the weak narrators, and he said, "Do you not have at hand the book of Ibn ʿAdī?" I said, "Yes." He said, "In it is sufficiency, nothing is to be added to it." Ibn ʿAdī died on the first of Jumādā al-Ākhirah of this year. Abū Tamīm, ruler of Egypt Maʿd b. Ismāʿīl b. ʿUbaydallāh, Abū Tamīm, ruler of Egypt. He was the first of them to appear in the Maghrib, and he was given the title al-Muʿizz li-Dīn Allāh. He assumed the rule on Friday, the twenty-ninth of Shawwāl in the year 341 AH. He remained in charge for twenty-three years, five months, and twenty-six days, of which three years were in Egypt. Jawhar had entered Egypt in the year 358 AH, consolidated matters in Egypt for Maʿd, built Cairo for him, and established the khuṭbah for him. He entered Egypt in the year 362 AH. He was violent. One day he summoned Abū Bakr al-Nābulusī the ascetic, who lived in the huts of the land of Damascus. He said to him, "It has reached us that you said: If a Muslim man has ten arrows, he must shoot one at the Byzantines and nine at us." He said, "I did not say that," so he thought he had retracted his statement. Then he said, "How did you say it?" He said, "I said: If a man has ten arrows, he must shoot nine at you and the tenth also at you, for you have altered the religion, killed the righteous, and claimed the light of divinity." Then he ordered that he be paraded in public. He was paraded on the first day, beaten with whips on the second day, and brought out on the third day and flayed. A Jewish man flayed him, and he recited the Qurʾān and did not groan. The Jew said, "Mercy for him entered me, so I stabbed the knife into his heart until he died quickly." The companion of al-Nābulusī related, saying: I went secretly on the first day, and I saw him while he was being paraded, and I asked, "What is this?" He said, "A trial." On the second day I saw him being beaten and I asked, "What is this?" He said, "Expiations." When he was brought out on the third day to be flayed, I asked, "What is this?" He said, "I hope it is ranks [in Paradise]." Kāfūr al-Ikhshīdī had sent money to this al-Nābulusī, and he returned it, saying to the messenger, "Tell him: God says, 'You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help' (Q 1:5), and seeking help from Him suffices." Kāfūr sent the messenger back to him and said, "Recite to him: 'What is in the heavens and what is in the earth and what is between them and what is under the soil' (Q 20:6). Where is Kāfūr mentioned here? And does wealth belong to anyone but Him?" Abū Bakr said, "Kāfūr is a Sufi, not us," and he accepted it. Muḥammad b. Badr the Elder al-Ḥammāmī In this year died Muḥammad b. Badr the Elder al-Ḥammāmī, a client of Ibn Ṭūlūn, who had governed Fārs after his father. Thābit b. Sinān In this year, in Dhū al-Qaʿdah, died Thābit b. Sinān b. Thābit b. Qurrah al-Ṣābiʾ, the author of the History.
