Then the year 362 AH began
Translation
✧ In this year, al-Muʿizz al-Fāṭimī entered the Egyptian lands, accompanied by the coffins of his forefathers. He reached Alexandria in Shaʿbān of this year, and the notables of Egypt had come to meet him there. He delivered an eloquent extemporaneous sermon to the people, in which he mentioned their virtue and nobility, and he lied, saying in it: 'Indeed, God has succored the subjects through them and through their state.' The judge of the lands of Egypt related this from him, and he was seated next to him. He asked him: 'Have you seen a caliph better than me?' He said to him: 'I have not seen any of the caliphs except the Commander of the Faithful.' He said to him: 'Did you perform the pilgrimage?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'And did you visit the grave of the Messenger ﷺ?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'And the graves of Abū Bakr and ʿUmar?' He said: 'I was bewildered as to what to say. Then I looked and saw his son standing with the senior commanders, so I said: "The Messenger of God ﷺ diverted me from them, just as the Commander of the Faithful diverted me from greeting the heir apparent." Then I rose, greeted him, and returned. The assembly then turned to someone other than me.' Then he traveled from Alexandria to Egypt, entering it on the fifth of Ramaḍān of this year. He alighted at al-Qaṣrayn. It is said that the first thing he did upon entering the seat of his rule was to fall prostrate in gratitude to God, Mighty and Majestic. Then the first case that came to him was that the wife of Kāfūr al-Ikhshīdī came forward to him, mentioning that she had deposited with a Jewish goldsmith a cloak of pearls woven with gold, and that he had denied it. He summoned him and questioned him, and the Jew denied and repudiated it. Thereupon al-Muʿizz ordered that his house be dug up and its contents brought out. They found the very cloak, which he had placed in a jar and buried in it. Al-Muʿizz handed it over to her, and she presented it to him and offered it to him, but he refused to accept it from her and returned it to her. Those present, believer and disbeliever, deemed this good of him. It is established in the hadith from the Prophet ﷺ: 'Indeed, God supports this religion even by a wicked man.'
