✧ Mention of the dismissal of Abū al-Faḍl from the vizierate of ʿIzz al-Dawlah and the vizierate of Ibn Baqiyyah In this year also the vizier Abū al-Faḍl al-ʿAbbās b. al-Ḥusayn was dismissed from the vizierate of ʿIzz al-Dawlah Bakhtiyār in Dhū al-Ḥijjah, and Muḥammad b. Baqiyyah was appointed vizier. The people were astonished at that, because he was lowly in himself and in his family, and his father had been one of the cultivators. But he was close to Bakhtiyār, and he used to take charge of the kitchen for him and present food to him, with the table napkin on his shoulder, until he was made vizier. The vizier Abū al-Faḍl was imprisoned, and he died soon afterward. It was said that he died by poison. During his tenure he had neglected God's side. One example of that is that he burned al-Karkh in Baghdād, and an incalculable number of people and amount of wealth perished in it. Another is that he wronged the subjects and seized wealth to distribute to the troops so that he might be safe, but God Most High did not save him, and that did not benefit him. The Messenger of God ﷺ spoke truly when he said: 'Whoever pleases the people by angering God, God will be angry with him and will make the people angry with him.' What he did in that regard was the most effective way that his enemies took to slander him and denounce him, and they achieved what they wanted because of his negligence in the matter of his religion and his wronging of his subjects. Following that, his wife, his chamberlain, and his secretary died while he was imprisoned, and his house fell into ruin and its trace was obliterated. We seek refuge in God from evil destinies, and we ask Him to seal our deeds with good, for the world is indeed passing away. As for Ibn Baqiyyah, his affairs became upright, and wealth flowed before him from what he took from the wealth of Abū al-Faḍl and the wealth of his companions. When that was exhausted, he returned to wronging the subjects, and matters became disordered at his hands, the districts fell into ruin, the ʿayyārūn appeared and did as they pleased, and discord between the Turks and Bakhtiyār increased. Ibn Baqiyyah then set about mending the situation between Bakhtiyār and Subuktikīn, and they made peace, but it was a truce fraught with hidden rancor. Subuktikīn rode to Bakhtiyār with the Turks and met with him, but then the situation returned to its former corruption. The reason for that was that a Daylamī passed by Subuktikīn's house while drunk, and he threw a javelin in his hand at the projecting window, and it stuck in it. Subuktikīn sensed it and shouted to his servants, and they seized him. Subuktikīn thought that he had been set upon him to kill him, so he interrogated him, but he did not confess. He sent him to Bakhtiyār and informed him of the situation, and Bakhtiyār ordered him killed. Subuktikīn's suspicion grew stronger that he had been set upon him, and that Bakhtiyār had killed him only so that he would not divulge it. The Daylamites were stirred up by his killing and took up arms. Then Bakhtiyār placated them, and they returned.
