Translation

✧ In this year the call to prayer in Damascus and the rest of Syria included “come to the best of deeds.” Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir said in the biography of Jaʿfar b. Falāḥ, governor of Damascus: The first to hold command there on behalf of the Fatimids, and it was he who ordered that as deputy for al-Muʿizz the Fatimid, ruler of Cairo. Abū Bakr Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Shirām said: On Thursday, five nights into Ṣafar of the year 360, the muezzins proclaimed in the mosque of Damascus and the rest of the city’s minarets and the minarets of the mosques “come to the best of deeds” after “come to success.” Jaʿfar b. Falāḥ ordered them to do that, and they were unable to oppose him and found no alternative but to hasten to obey him. On Friday, the eighth of Jumādā al-Ākhirah of that year, the muezzins were ordered to repeat the call to prayer and the takbīr in the iqāmah two by two, and to say in the iqāmah: “come to the best of deeds.” The people considered that momentous and bore patiently the decree of God, blessed and exalted be He. And God knows best.
