✧ Mention of the siege of ʿImrān b. Shāhīn In this year, in Shawwāl, Bakhtiyār went down to besiege ʿImrān b. Shāhīn. He stayed at Wāsiṭ hunting for a month, then ordered his vizier Abū al-Faḍl to go down to al-Jāmida and the marshlands of al-Baṭīḥa. He based his plan on blocking the mouths of the rivers and the watercourses leading to al-Baṭīḥa, diverting them back to the Tigris, al-Fārūth, and the quarter of Ṭayr. He built the causeways over which one could travel to al-ʿIrāq. The days grew long, and the Tigris rose and destroyed what they had built. ʿImrān moved to another stronghold among the strongholds of al-Baṭīḥa and transferred all his wealth to it. When the waters receded and the roads became passable, they found the place of ʿImrān b. Shāhīn empty. The days grew long, and the people became weary of staying. They hated that land because of the heat, the mosquitoes, the frogs, and the cutting off of the supplies they were accustomed to. The troops rioted against the vizier, insulted him, and refused to remain. Bakhtiyār was compelled to make peace with ʿImrān in return for money he would receive from him. ʿImrān had feared him at first and offered him five million dirhams. When he saw the disorder in Bakhtiyār's affairs, he offered two million dirhams in installments, but he did not hand over hostages to them, nor did he swear to them to pay the money. When the army departed, ʿImrān snatched up the stragglers among the people and took booty from them. Bakhtiyār's army fell into corruption, and obedience and awe departed from them. Bakhtiyār reached Baghdād in Rajab of the year 361 AH.
