Translation
✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year. 2679 - Al-Ḥasan b. ʿAllān b. Ibrāhīm b. Marwān, Abū ʿAlī al-Khaṭṭāb al-Fāmī. He was born in the year 284 [AH], and he related from Abū Khalīfa and Jaʿfar al-Firyābī. Abū Nuʿaym related from him and said: “He is trustworthy.” Ibn Abī al-Fawāris said: “He was abundant in ḥadīth, trustworthy, and well-concealed.” He died in Dhū al-Ḥijja of this year. 2680 - Al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā b. Jaʿfar, Abū Muḥammad al-ʿAlawī. He related in Baghdād, and Ibn Rizqawayh and Abū ʿAlī b. Shādhān heard from him. He died in Dhū al-Ḥijja of this year. [He narrated rejected ḥadīths.] 2681 - Al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā b. al-Ḥasan b. Jaʿfar b. Aḥmad b. Kaysān, Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥarbī. He related from Ismāʿīl b. Isḥāq al-Qāḍī and others. Abū ʿAlī b. Shādhān and Abū Nuʿaym al-Aṣbahānī related from him, and he said: “He was trustworthy.” He died in Shawwāl of this year. 2682 - Ḥaydara b. ʿUmar, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Zandawarrdī. One of the jurists upon the school of Dāwūd b. ʿAlī al-Ẓāhirī. He died in Jumādā al-Ūlā of this year, and he was buried in the cemeteries of al-Khayzurān. 2683 - ʿUbayd Allāh b. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad, Abū al-Fatḥ al-Naḥwī, known as Jakhjakh. He heard al-Baghawī and Ibn Durayd. Muḥammad b. Abī al-Fawāris related from him, and he was trustworthy. He died in Jumādā al-Ākhira of this year. 2684 - Kāfūr the servant. He took control of Miṣr and al-Shām after the death of his master. His master was Abū Bakr [Muḥammad b. Ṭughj] al-Ikhshīd, and [his master al-Ikhshīd] had purchased him for eighteen dinars. He is the one whom al-Mutanabbī sought and praised. I reflected upon al-Mutanabbī’s panegyrics to him and saw in them speech that was ambiguous, bearing both praise and blame. Perhaps al-Mutanabbī played with the intellect of that servant. For his saying: “Those who aim for Kāfūr abandon others” — there is no doubt that whoever aims for something has abandoned other than it. And there is no doubt that whoever aims for the sea regards the little streams as insignificant. But who can guarantee [that he meant]: that you are the sea? Likewise his saying: “Your enemy is blamed by every tongue” — it could mean that none opposes you except one like you, and one like you is blameworthy. His saying: “For God is a secret in your loftiness” — it could mean that fate decreed the rule of one like you, not that you deserve it. This suspicion is strengthened by the fact that he would leave his presence and then satirize him. Abū Jaʿfar b. Muslim b. Ṭāhir al-ʿAlawī said: I have never seen anyone more generous than Kāfūr. One day I was riding alongside him while he was in a light procession intending a pleasurable outing. Before him were several spare horses with saddles of gold and silver, and behind him the mules of the procession. His whip fell from his hand, and his grooms did not see it. So I dismounted from my mount, picked it up from the ground, and handed it to him. He said: “O noble one, I seek refuge with God from reaching such a limit. I never thought that time would bring me to the point where you would do this for me.” He was about to weep. I said: “I am a beneficiary and a client of the Ustādh.” When he reached the gate of his house, he bade me farewell. When I went on, I turned and suddenly the spare horses and the mules were all there with me. I said: “What is this?” They said: “The Ustādh ordered that this be conveyed to you.” So I brought it into my house, and its value was more than fifteen thousand dinars. Kāfūr governed Miṣr and al-Shām for twenty-two years, and the khuṭba was delivered in them for the ʿAlawīs. He died in this year.
