✧ Mention of the Byzantines' taking possession of the city of Antioch In this year, in Muḥarram, the Byzantines took possession of the city of Antioch. The reason for that was that they besieged a fortress near Antioch called the Fortress of Lūqā, and that they made an agreement with its people, who were Christians, that they would move from it to Antioch and pretend that they were only relocating from it out of fear of the Byzantines. Then when they came to be at Antioch, they would help them conquer it. The Byzantines departed from them after their agreement on that. The people of the fortress moved and settled at Antioch near the mountain that is there. When their move had been two months earlier, the Byzantines arrived with the brother of Nicephorus the king, and they were about forty thousand men. They surrounded the wall of Antioch, and they climbed the mountain to the area where the people of the Fortress of Lūqā were. When the people of the town saw that they had taken possession of that area, they threw themselves from the wall, and the Byzantines took possession of the town. They put the sword to its people, then they brought out the old men, old women, and children from the town and said to them: "Go wherever you wish." They took the young men, women, boys, and girls and carried them off to the land of the Byzantines as captives. They numbered more than a thousand people. Their siege of it was in Dhū al-Ḥijjah.
