✧ Mention of Qarghawayh’s seizure of Aleppo and his expulsion of Abū al-Maʿālī b. Ḥamdān from it In this year as well, Qarghawayh, the ghulām of Sayf al-Dawlah b. Ḥamdān ﷺ, seized Aleppo and expelled from it Abū al-Maʿālī Sharīf b. Sayf al-Dawlah b. Ḥamdān. Abū al-Maʿālī then went to Ḥarrān, but its people prevented him from entering. He asked them to allow his companions to enter so that they could take provisions from it for two days, and they permitted them. He entered to his mother in Mayyāfāriqīn, who was the daughter of Saʿīd b. Ḥamdān. Most of his companions dispersed from him and went to Abū Taghlib b. Ḥamdān. When he reached his mother, it reached her that his ghulāms and his secretaries had plotted to seize her and imprison her, just as Abū Taghlib had done to his father Nāṣir al-Dawlah. So she locked the gates of the city and prevented her son from entering for three days, until she had sent away those she wished to send away and secured herself. Then she permitted him and those who remained with him to enter the town, and she released provisions for them. Ḥarrān remained with no amīr over it, but the khuṭbah in it was for Abū al-Maʿālī b. Sayf al-Dawlah, and in it were a group of its leading men who governed it and set right the people’s affairs. Then Abū al-Maʿālī crossed the Euphrates to Syria and headed to Ḥamāh, where he stayed, as we shall mention in the year three hundred seventy-two.
