✧ Mention of the killing of Abū Firās b. Ḥamdān In this year, in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir, Abū Firās b. Abī al-ʿAlāʾ Saʿīd b. Ḥamdān was killed. The reason for that was that he was residing in Ḥimṣ. A rift occurred between him and Abū al-Maʿālī (b. Sayf al-Dawlah b. Ḥamdān, so Abū al-Maʿālī sought him), and Abū Firās withdrew to Ṣadad, which is a village on the edge of the desert near Ḥimṣ. Abū al-Maʿālī gathered the Bedouin from Banū Kilāb and others, and sent them in pursuit of him together with Qarghawayh. He overtook him at Ṣadad, and they attacked him by surprise. His companions sought quarter, and he mingled with those of them who sought quarter. Qarghawayh said to a servant of his: "Kill him." So he killed him and took his head, and his body was left in the desert until some of the Bedouin buried it. Abū Firās was the maternal uncle of Abū al-Maʿālī b. Sayf al-Dawlah, and indeed the one who said, "Kingship is barren," spoke the truth.
