Translation
✧ Mention of the kings who died this year In it died Washmakīr b. Ziyād, as we have mentioned, and Muʿizz al-Dawlah, whom we have also mentioned, and al-Ḥasan b. al-Fayrazān, and Kāfūr al-Ikhshīdī, and Naqafūr the king of the Byzantines, and Abū ʿAlī Muḥammad b. Ilyās, lord of Kirmān, and Sayf al-Dawlah b. Ḥamdān. As for Sayf al-Dawlah (Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Abī al-Hayjāʾ ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥamdān b. Ḥamdūn al-Taghlibī al-Rabaʿī), he died in Aleppo in Ṣafar, and his coffin was carried to Mayyāfāriqīn and he was buried there. His illness was hemiplegia; it is also said it was difficulty in urinating. He was born in Dhū al-Ḥijjah in the year 303. He was generous, noble, and brave, and his reports in that regard are well known. He used to recite poetry about his brother Nāṣir al-Dawlah: I granted you the heights though you were worthy of them, and I said to them: between me and my brother there is a distinction. It was not that I recoiled from them; rather, I stepped aside from my right so the right was completed for you. Would you not be content that I be the follower if I am content that you have precedence? He also composed: His blood has flowed in his tears, so how long will you wrong him? Turn your gaze away from him, for his arrows from you have wounded him. How can he endure patiently when the inklings of fancy pain him? When Sayf al-Dawlah died, his son Abū al-Maʿālī Sharīf ruled his lands after him. As for Abū ʿAlī b. Ilyās, the mention of his death will come in the year 357. As for Kāfūr, he was the lord of Egypt, and he was one of the clients of al-Ikhshīd Muḥammad b. Ṭughj. He took control of Egypt and Damascus after the death of al-Ikhshīd due to the young age of his sons. He was a black eunuch, and al-Mutanabbī has in his regard praise and satire. Al-Mutanabbī had intended to go to Egypt, and his story with him is well known. When he was buried, it was written on his grave: Look at what the days have done to others: they destroyed people who were once there. Their world passed away, and it laughed in the days of their rule, until when they perished, it wailed for them and wept.
