Translation

✧ Mention of a raid against the Byzantines and the rebellion of Harran In this year, in Shawwal, the people of Tarsus entered Byzantine territory as raiders, and Naja, the servant of Sayf al-Dawla b. Hamdan, also entered it from another pass, while Sayf al-Dawla was not with them due to his illness, for he had been afflicted with hemiplegia two years before. He halted at the head of one of those passes. The people of Tarsus penetrated deeply in their raid until they reached Qunya and returned. Sayf al-Dawla returned to Aleppo, and on the way he was seized by a fainting spell, so that people feared he would die. Hibat Allah, the son of his brother Nasir al-Dawla b. Hamdan, attacked Ibn Naja the Christian and killed him. He had been a close confidant of Sayf al-Dawla. He killed him only because he had made advances toward a servant of his, and he was jealous for that. Then Sayf al-Dawla recovered. When Hibat Allah learned that his uncle had not died, he fled to Harran. When he entered it, he told its people that his uncle had died, and he demanded an oath from them that they would be at peace with those he made peace with, and at war with those he fought. They swore to him, but they excepted his uncle in the oath. Sayf al-Dawla sent his servant Naja to Harran in pursuit of Hibat Allah. When he approached it, Hibat Allah fled to his father in Mosul. Naja encamped at Harran on the twenty-seventh of Shawwal. Its people came out to him the next day. He seized them and imposed a levy on them of one million dirhams. He set guards over them until they paid it in five days, after painful beatings in the presence of their families and households. They brought out their goods and sold everything worth a dinar for a dirham, because all the people of the town were selling and none among them was buying, since they were being fined. Naja's men bought what they wanted, and the people of the town were impoverished. Naja then went to Mayyafariqin, leaving Harran empty without a governor. The brigands then gained power over its people. The affair of Naja was as we shall mention in the year 353.
