✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year 2619 - Al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad b. Hārūn, Abū Muḥammad al-Muhallabī. From the descendants of al-Muhallab b. Abī Ṣufrah. Muʿizz al-Dawlah Abū al-Ḥusayn [Aḥmad] b. Buwayh appointed him as his vizier, and he remained in his vizierate for thirteen years and three months. He used to compose fine poetry and possessed [abundant] literary culture. He would become moved with delight at the making of a man and would be stirred for that, and he had forbearance and deliberateness. Abū Isḥāq al-Ṣāghānī related, saying: The vizier Abū Muḥammad al-Muhallabī had fashioned an inkwell and a pen-case and decorated them with a heavy ornamentation, and it was a cubit and a fraction in length by a span in width. It was placed before him while Abū Aḥmad al-Faḍl b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Shīrāzī was sitting on his right, and Abū Aḥmad was seated at his side. We privately discussed the beauty of the inkwell, and Abū Aḥmad said: How much I needed it so that I could sell it and benefit from its price. I said: Then what would the vizier do? He said: It would go into his treasury. The vizier heard what passed between us by inclining his ear toward us. Then I met with Abū Aḥmad the next day, and he said to me: Do you know the news of the inkwell? I said: No. He said: Last night his messenger came to me with the inkwell and its pen-case, a kerchief, ten pieces of cloth, and five thousand dirhams, and said: The vizier says to you: I am aware of the shortfall of resources afflicting you and the multiplication of expenses upon you, and I have favored you with this inkwell because I thought you admired it, and I have put with it something for you to clothe yourself with and to spend on some of your expenses. So I remained astonished at the coincidence of what we had been discussing, and this happened immediately after it. The vizier then ordered the making of another inkwell, and it was made. We entered his assembly while it had been placed before him and he was signing from it. He looked at me and at Abū Aḥmad while we were observing it, and said: Come now, which of you two wants it on condition of being excused from attending? We felt ashamed and knew that he had heard our words, and we said: Rather, may God give the vizier enjoyment [of it] and preserve him so that he may give away a thousand of them. Abū Muḥammad al-Muhallabī died in this year at the age of sixty-four, and was buried in the cemetery of Quraysh. 2620 - Daʿlaj b. Aḥmad b. Daʿlaj b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Abū Muḥammad al-Sijistānī al-Muʿaddil. He heard hadith in the lands of Khurasan, al-Rayy, Hulwan, Baghdad, [al-Basra], and Makkah. He was among the wealthy and those famous for piety and generosity. He had ongoing charitable endowments and bequests for the people of hadith in Baghdad, Makkah, and Sijistan. He had resided as a neighbor of Makkah for a time, when a group of Arabs came and said: A brother of yours from the people of Khurasan killed a brother of ours, so we will kill you in his place. He said: Fear God, for Khurasan is not a single city. The people gathered and they let him go, so he moved to Baghdad and settled there. He used to say: There is nothing in the world like my house, for there is nothing in the world like Baghdad, nor in Baghdad anything like al-Qaṭīʿah, nor in al-Qaṭīʿah anything like the lane of Abū Khalaf, nor in the lane anything like my house. He transmitted hadith in Baghdad from ʿUthmān b. Saʿīd al-Dārimī, al-Ḥasan b. Sufyān al-Nasawī, Ibn al-Barāʾ, al-Bāghandī, ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad, and many others. From him related Ibn Ḥayyawayh, al-Dāraquṭnī, Ibn Rizqawayh, ʿAlī and ʿAbd al-Malik the two sons of Bishrān, and others. He was trustworthy, reliable, and dependable; the judges accepted his testimony. Al-Dāraquṭnī compiled books for him, among them "al-Musnad al-Kabīr." Whenever he doubted a hadith he would strike it out. Al-Dāraquṭnī said: I have not seen among our shaykhs anyone more reliable than him. From Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥaddād, from a shaykh whom he named, who said: I attended the Friday mosque in the city of al-Manṣūr. He said: And Abū al-Qāsim al-Azharī narrated to me, from Abū ʿUmar b. Ḥayyawayh, who said: Daʿlaj brought me into his house and showed me bundles of money packed in his dwelling, and said: O Abū ʿUmar, take from this whatever you wish. I thanked him and said to him: I am in no need of it and have no use for it. From Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥaddād, from a shaykh whom he named, who said: I attended on Friday the congregational mosque in the city of al-Manṣūr, and I saw a man in front of me in the row, of fine dignity, manifest humility, constant in prayer. He did not cease performing supererogatory prayers from the time he entered the mosque until close to the commencement of the prayer, then he sat down. His awe overcame me, and love for him entered my heart. Then the prayer was commenced, but he did not pray with the people. That distressed me greatly, and I marveled at his state, and his action angered me. When I finished, I went up to him and said: O man, I have seen nothing more astonishing than your affair. You prolonged the supererogatory prayer and performed it well, yet you neglected the obligatory prayer and abandoned it. He said to me: O you, I have an enemy and an ailment that prevented me from praying. I said: What is it? He said: I am a man who owes a debt. I hid in my house for a period because of it. Then I attended today the congregational mosque for prayer, and before the prayer began I turned and saw my creditor [against me], and he saw me. Out of fear of him I soiled my clothes, [and this is my excuse]. I ask you by God to cover for me and conceal my affair. I said to him: Who is the one to whom you owe the debt? He said: Daʿlaj b. Aḥmad. Beside him was a companion of Daʿlaj who had prayed without recognizing him. He heard these words and went immediately to Daʿlaj and told him the story. Daʿlaj said to him: Go to the man, carry him to the bathhouse, throw upon him a robe from my clothes, and seat him in my house until I return from the mosque. The man did that. When Daʿlaj returned to his house, he ordered food, and it was brought, and he and the man ate. Then he brought out his account and looked into it, and found that the man owed five thousand dirhams. He said [to him]: Look, lest there be an error in the account against you or a payment of yours be forgotten. [The man] said: No. So Daʿlaj struck out his account and wrote beneath it "paid in full." Then he brought the scales and weighed out five thousand dirhams for him, and said to him: As for the first account, we have released you from it in what is between us and you, and I ask you to accept these five thousand dirhams and to absolve us of the terror that entered your heart by your seeing us in the congregational mosque. Abū al-Ḥusayn [Aḥmad] b. al-Ḥusayn al-Wāʿiẓ said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Mūsā al-Hāshimī was entrusted with ten thousand dinars for an orphan. His means became straitened, and he stretched his hand to it and spent it. When the boy reached manhood, the sultan ordered the lifting of the guardianship over him and the handing over of his wealth to him, and commanded Ibn Abī Mūsā to bring the money to be delivered to the boy. Ibn Abī Mūsā said: When that was commanded of me, the earth, vast as it is, became straitened for me, and I was bewildered in my affair, not knowing from what direction to raise the money. So I left my house early, mounted my mule, and headed toward al-Karkh not knowing where to go. My mule brought me to the lane of al-Salūlī and stopped with me at the door of the mosque of Daʿlaj b. Aḥmad. I swung my leg down, entered the mosque, and prayed the dawn prayer behind him. When he said the salutation, he turned to me and welcomed me. He rose and I rose with him, and he entered his house. When we sat down, a servant girl came with a delicate table on which was harīsah. He said: Let the sharīf eat. I ate while unable to grasp my affair. When he saw my hesitation, he said: I see you constrained; what is the news? I related to him my story and that I had spent the money. He said: Eat, for your need will be fulfilled. Then he brought sweets, and we ate. When the food was removed and we washed our hands, he said: O servant girl, open that door. There appeared a storeroom full of leather-bound moneybags. He brought out some of them and opened them until he brought out the coins from which the dinars were, and summoned the servant, the counter, and the balance, and weighed out ten thousand dinars and put them in a pouch, and said: Let the sharīf take these. I said: Let the shaykh record it against me. He said: I will. My mind almost flew with joy. I mounted my mule, placed the purse on the pommel, covered it with my ṭaylasān, and returned to my house. I went down to the sultan with a strong heart and firm spirit, and said: I think he had sensed that I had consumed the orphan's wealth and kept it for myself, but the money, I have brought it out. The chief judge, the witnesses, the nuqabāʾ, and the guardians of the covenants were brought, and the boy was brought, his guardianship was lifted, and the money was delivered to him. Great gratitude and praise were bestowed upon me. When I returned to my house, one of the amirs from the descendants of the caliphate, a man of great standing, summoned me and said: I desire to have dealings with you [and to entrust to you my estates] in Bādiyat Yā and Nahr al-Malik. I undertook that for the sum agreed upon between me and him. The year came, and I paid him, and I received from the profit a very great amount. My undertaking for these estates was for three years. When they passed, I calculated my account, and I had obtained thirty thousand dinars. I set aside the replacement for the ten thousand dinars I had taken from Daʿlaj and carried it to him. I prayed the dawn prayer with him, and when I finished and he finished his prayer, he saw me and rose with me to his house. He presented the table and the harīsah, and I ate with firm courage and a good heart. When we finished eating, he said to me: Your news and your state. I said: By the grace of God and by your grace, I have profited by what you did for me thirty thousand dinars, and here are ten thousand as a replacement for the dinars I took from you. He said: Glory be to God! By God, the dinars did not leave my hand while I intended to take a replacement for them; let the girls be adorned with them. I said to him: O shaykh, what is the origin of this wealth that you would give me ten thousand dinars? He said: Know that I grew up, memorized the Qurʾan, heard hadith, and used to seek seclusion. A man from the sea merchants came to me and said: Are you Daʿlaj b. Aḥmad? I said: Yes. He said: I desire to hand over my wealth to you so that you may trade with it. Whatever profit God facilitates will be between us, and whatever loss occurs will be from my capital. He handed me invoices for a million dirhams and said to me: Spread your hand, and do not know of any place where you spend this merchandise except that you carry it to him. He kept coming back to me year after year, bringing me the like of this, and the goods multiplied. When it was the last year, we met, and he said to me: I travel often by sea, so if God decrees for me what He decrees for His creatures, then this wealth is yours, on condition that you give charity from it, build mosques, and do good. I do the like of this. God has increased the wealth in my hands. I ask you to keep this matter concealed for as long as I live. Daʿlaj died in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of this year, at the age of ninety-four or ninety-five. 2621 - ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar b. Shādhān, Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Bazzār. From the people of the eastern side.
