✧ Mention of the death of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Nāṣir, ruler of al-Andalus, and the accession of his son al-Ḥakam In this year, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh, ruler of al-Andalus, titled al-Nāṣir li-Dīn Allāh, died in Ramaḍān. His rule lasted fifty years and six months, and his age was seventy-three years. He was white, with bluish-grey eyes, handsome of face, large of body, short of shins; his stirrup-straps were close to a span in length, and he was long in the back. He was the first of the Umayyads to adopt the titles of the caliphs; he named himself Amīr al-Muʾminīn. He left behind eleven male children. Those of his forefathers who preceded him were addressed and invoked in sermons as "the amīr" and "sons of the caliphs." He remained thus until twenty-seven years of his rule had passed. When news reached him of the weakness of the caliphs in Iraq, the emergence of the ʿAlawīs in Ifrīqiya, and their being addressed as Amīr al-Muʾminīn, he then commanded that he be titled al-Nāṣir li-Dīn Allāh, that he be invoked in sermons as Amīr al-Muʾminīn, and that the people of al-Andalus say that he was the first caliph to rule after his grandfather. His mother was an umm walad named Muzna. No one who adopted the title Amīr al-Muʾminīn reached his duration in the caliphate except al-Mustanṣir the ʿAlawī, ruler of Egypt, for his caliphate lasted sixty years. When he died, his son al-Ḥakam b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān assumed authority after him and took the title al-Mustanṣir. His mother was an umm walad named Marjāna. Al-Nāṣir left behind several children, among them ʿAbd Allāh, who was a Shāfiʿī in jurisprudence, learned in poetry, historical reports, and other subjects, and was an ascetic.
