Translation
✧ Then the year 349 AH began. Mention of the appearance of al-Mustajīr billāh. In this year there appeared in Adharbayjān a man from the descendants of ʿĪsā b. al-Muktafī billāh, and he was titled al-Mustajīr billāh. He pledged allegiance to al-Riḍā from the family of Muḥammad, wore wool, displayed justice, commanded the good, forbade the wrong, and his followers became numerous. The reason for his appearance was that Jistān b. al-Marzubān, the ruler of Adharbayjān, abandoned his father's conduct in managing the army, and occupied himself with play and consulting women, while Jistān b. Sharmizan was in Urmiyah (fortified in it), and Wahsūdhān was at al-Ṭarm striking between the sons of his brother so that they would disagree. Then Jistān b. al-Marzubān arrested his vizier al-Nuʿaymī. Between him and the vizier of Jistān b. Sharmizan there was a marriage alliance, and that was Abū al-Ḥasan ʿUbayd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Ḥamdawayh. Abū al-Ḥasan felt uneasy at the arrest of al-Nuʿaymī, so he induced his companion Ibn Sharmizan to correspond with Ibrāhīm b. al-Marzubān, who was in Arminiyah. He wrote to him and made him aspire to sovereignty, so he marched to him and they made for Marāghah and took possession of it. When Jistān b. al-Marzubān learned of that, he corresponded with Ibn Sharmizan and his vizier Abū al-Ḥasan, and reconciled them, and guaranteed them the release of al-Nuʿaymī. So he turned away from supporting Ibrāhīm, and the hypocrisy of Ibn Sharmizan became apparent to him and his brother, so they corresponded and agreed against him. Then al-Nuʿaymī escaped from the prison of Jistān b. al-Marzubān, and went to Mūqān, and corresponded with Ibn ʿĪsā b. al-Muktafī billāh, and made him aspire to the caliphate, and that he would gather men for him, and gain for him Adharbayjān, and if he became strong he would make for Iraq. So he went to him with about three hundred men, and Jistān b. Sharmizan came to him and he was strengthened by him, and the people pledged allegiance to him, and his affair grew great. Then Jistān and Ibrāhīm, the two sons of al-Marzubān, marched against them intending to fight them. When they met, the companions of al-Mustajīr were routed, and he was taken prisoner and executed. It was said that he was killed, and it was said rather that he died.
