✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year 2586 - Aḥmad b. Salmān b. al-Ḥasan b. Isrāʾīl b. Yūnus, Abū Bakr al-Najjād. He was born in the year 253 and heard [ḥadīth from] Abū Dāwūd, al-Bāghandī, Abū Bakr b. Abī al-Dunyā, ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad, and many others. He used to walk barefoot in pursuit of ḥadīth. He compiled the Musnad and composed a large book on the Sunan. On Fridays he had two circles in the Jāmiʿ al-Manṣūr, before the prayer and after it: one for legal rulings in fiqh according to the school of Aḥmad, and the other for dictating ḥadīth. Abū Bakr b. He resided in Makkah and became its shaykh. He performed the pilgrimage nearly sixty times. It is said that he did not urinate or defecate within the sacred precinct for forty years while residing there. He died in this year. 2593 - Muḥammad b. Isḥāq b. ʿAbd al-Raḥīm, Abū Bakr al-Sūsī. He came to Baghdad in the year 341 and related sound ḥadīths there. Al-Dāraquṭnī, Ibn Rizqawayh, and others related from him. [He died in this year.] 2594 - Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Isḥāq b. al-Buhlūl b. Ḥassān [b. Sinān], Abū Ṭālib al-Tanūkhī. His origin was from al-Anbār. He heard Abū Muslim al-Kajjī, Bishr b. Mūsā al-Asadī, ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, and others. Ṭalḥah [b. Muḥammad] b. Jaʿfar al-Shāhid said: Aḥmad b. Isḥāq b. al-Buhlūl remained judge of the city—meaning the city of al-Manṣūr—from the year 296 until Rabīʿ al-Awwal of the year 316. When he fell ill, his son Abū Ṭālib Muḥammad would deputize for him. He was a man of excellent conduct, good school, and great integrity, and one of those who wrote down knowledge and related ḥadīth two years after his father. ʿAlī b. ʿAmr al-Jurayrī said: Abū Ṭālib b. al-Buhlūl died on Sunday at forenoon, sixteen nights having passed of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, in the year 348. 2595 - Muḥammad b. He had one of the finest voices for the Qurʾān among people. He was born in Rajab of the year 260 and related from Aḥmad b. ʿUbayd b. Nāṣiḥ, al-Ḥārith b. Muḥammad b. Abī Usāmah, ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad al-Dawraqī, Muḥammad b. ʿUthmān b. Abī Shaybah, and others. Ibn Rizqawayh, Ibn Shādhān, Ibn Bishrān, and others related from him. Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Asadī said: I heard my father say: I performed the pilgrimage one year, and in that year Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī and Abū Bakr al-Ādamī al-Qāriʾ also performed it. When we reached the city of the Messenger ﷺ, Abū al-Qāsim al-Baghawī came to me and said: “O Abū Bakr, here is a blind man who has gathered a circle in the mosque of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and sat telling lies and relating fabricated ḥadīths and forged reports. I think we should go to him to rebuke him and prevent him.” I said to him: “O Abū al-Qāsim, our words here will have no effect with this large gathering and great crowd, and we are not in Baghdad where our position would be recognized. But here there is another matter which is the right one.” So I turned to Abū Bakr al-Ādamī and said to him: “Seek refuge with Allah and recite.” No sooner did he begin reciting than the circle dispersed and all the people left, gathering around us to listen to the recitation of Abū Bakr al-Ādamī, leaving the blind man alone. I heard him say to his guide: “Take my hand; thus do blessings vanish.” Dharrat al-Ṣūfī said: I was spending the night in Kalwādhā on a high rooftop. When the night grew still, I got up to pray and heard a faint sound coming from afar. I listened to it and considered it, and it was the voice of Abū Bakr al-Ādamī al-Qāriʾ. I estimated that it was descending on the Tigris. I listened, and the sound neither drew nearer nor increased beyond that amount for an hour, then it ceased. I had doubts about the matter. I prayed and slept, then set out early and entered Baghdad two hours into the day or less. I was passing by in a samāriyyah boat when Abū Bakr al-Ādamī came down to the riverbank from the house of Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Mūsawī al-ʿAlawī, which is near the landing of Jaʿfar on the Tigris. I went up to him and asked him how he was. He told me he was safe, and I said: “Where were you last night?” He said: “In this house.” I said: “Did you recite?” He said: “Yes.” I said: “At what time?” He said: “After midnight until near the last third.” He said: I looked, and it was the very time I had heard his voice in Kalwādhā. I was greatly astonished, and he noticed it and said: “What is the matter with you?” I said: “I heard your voice last night while I was on a rooftop in Kalwādhā, and I doubted it. Had you not just now told me without any arrangement, I would not have believed it.” He said: “Then relate it from me, for I shall relate it always.” Abū Bakr al-Ādamī died on Wednesday, two nights remaining of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, and was buried that day in the portico opposite the grave of Maʿrūf al-Karkhī. Muḥammad b. Abī al-Fawāris said: In the year 348 died Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar, Abū Bakr al-Ādamī, and he had become confused in what he related. Abū Jaʿfar ʿAbd Allāh b. Ismāʿīl b. Buwayh said: I saw Abū Bakr al-Ādamī in a dream shortly after his death and said to him: “What has Allah done with you?” He said to me: “He made me stand before Him, and I endured hardships and difficult matters.” I said to him: “What about those nights, those stations, and the Qurʾān?” He said: “Nothing harmed me more than they, because they were for this world.” I said to him: “To what did your affair come?” He said: “Allah, Mighty and Glorious, said to me: ‘I have sworn by Myself that I shall not punish the sons of eighty.’” Among the notables who died in this year: Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥasan b. Ibrāhīm Ṭabāṭabā b. Ismāʿīl b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib al-Hāshimī al-Miṣrī. He was one of its lords, its generous ones, and its munificent ones. Sweetmeats never ceased to be made in his house, and a man never ceased cracking almonds for it every day at his gate. People had regular allowances of sweetmeats from him: some received a gift every day, others on Friday, and others each month. Kāfūr al-Ikhshīdī had each day two bowls and a loaf of fine white bread. When al-Muʿizz al-Fāṭimī came to Cairo, he met him and asked: “To whom does our master trace his lineage among the People of the House?” He said: “The answer is to the people of the land.” Then when he entered the palace, he gathered the nobles, drew half his sword, and said: “This is my lineage.” Then he scattered gold over them and said: “This is my distinction.” They said: “We hear and obey.” But the correct view is that the one who said these words to al-Muʿizz was the son of this man or another sharif, and Allah knows best; for the death of this man was in this year at the age of sixty-two, whereas al-Muʿizz came to Egypt only in the year 362, as will come.
