✧ Mention of the march of the armies of al-Muʿizz al-ʿAlawī to the farthest parts of the Maghrib In this year the standing of Abū al-Ḥasan Jawhar with al-Muʿizz in Ifrīqiya became great, his rank rose, and he attained the status of the vizierate. Al-Muʿizz dispatched him in Ṣafar at the head of a numerous army, among whom were Zīrī b. Munād al-Ṣinhājī and others, and commanded him to march to the farthest parts of the Maghrib. He marched to Tāharta, where Yaʿlā b. Muḥammad al-Zanātī presented himself before him. He honoured him and treated him well. Then he rebelled against Jawhar, so Jawhar seized him, and his followers rose up, but Jawhar fought them, and they were defeated. Jawhar pursued them to the city of Afakān, which he entered by the sword and plundered, plundering also the palaces of Yaʿlā and taking his son, who was a boy. He ordered Afakān to be demolished and burned with fire. That took place in Jumādā al-Ākhirah. Then he marched from there to Fās, whose ruler was Aḥmad b. Bakr. He shut its gates, so Jawhar besieged it and fought against it for a time, but he could not overcome it. Gifts came to him from the Fāṭimid amīrs in the farthest parts of al-Sūs, and they advised Jawhar and his companions to depart for Sijilmāsah. Its ruler, Muḥammad b. Wāsūl, had assumed the title al-Shākir li-llāh and was addressed as Amīr al-Muʾminīn, and he had struck coinage in his own name, remaining in that state for sixteen years. When he heard of Jawhar he fled; then he wanted to return to Sijilmāsah, but some people met him, took him captive, and carried him to Jawhar. Jawhar went on until he reached the surrounding ocean. He ordered that some of its fish be caught for him, and they caught some for him. He placed it in jars of water and carried it to al-Muʿizz. He traversed all those lands and conquered them, then returned to Fās and fought against it for a long time. Zīrī b. Munād arose and chose from his people men of courage, and ordered them to take ladders and make for the town. They climbed the lower wall on the ladders while the people of Fās were secure. When they had climbed onto the wall, they killed those upon it and descended to the second wall, opened the gates, lit torches, and beat drums. The command was shared between Zīrī and Jawhar. When Jawhar heard it, he mounted with the troops and entered Fās. Its ruler went into hiding and was seized after two days and placed with the ruler of Sijilmāsah. Its conquest took place in Ramaḍān of the year 348. Jawhar carried the two of them in two cages to al-Muʿizz at al-Mahdiyya, and he gave Tāharta to Zīrī b. Munād.
