Translation

✧ Mention of Muʿizz al-Dawlah’s seizure of al-Mawṣil and his withdrawal from it We have already mentioned the peace agreement between Muʿizz al-Dawlah and Nāṣir al-Dawlah for two million dirhams every year. When this year came, Nāṣir al-Dawlah delayed the transport of the money, so Muʿizz al-Dawlah prepared to march to al-Mawṣil and set out toward it in the middle of Jumādā al-Ūlā, accompanied by his vizier al-Muhallabī. Nāṣir al-Dawlah left it for Naṣībīn, and Muʿizz al-Dawlah took control of al-Mawṣil. It was Nāṣir al-Dawlah's custom, whenever someone attacked him, to leave al-Mawṣil and take with him all the secretaries, agents, and those who knew the sources of revenue and the sultan's benefits. Sometimes he placed them in his fortresses such as the fortress of Kūwāshā, al-Zaʿfarān, and others. At that time, the fortress of Kūwāshā was called the fortress of Ardumusht. Nāṣir al-Dawlah would order the Arabs to raid the forage gatherers and those carrying provisions, so whoever attacked Nāṣir al-Dawlah's lands would remain besieged and constrained. When Muʿizz al-Dawlah attacked him this time, Nāṣir al-Dawlah did that to him. Provisions became scarce for Muʿizz al-Dawlah and his army, and he learned that in Naṣībīn there was a great amount of sultanic grain. So he marched from al-Mawṣil toward it, leaving as his deputy in al-Mawṣil Subuktikīn the chief chamberlain. When he was midway on the road, he learned that Nāṣir al-Dawlah's sons, Abū al-Murajjā and Hibat Allāh, were in Sinjār with an army. He sent an army against them. Nāṣir al-Dawlah's sons were not aware of the army until it was upon them, and they were too rushed to take their baggage. Nāṣir al-Dawlah's sons returned to them while they were off guard, and they put the sword to them, killing and capturing, and they stayed in Sinjār. Muʿizz al-Dawlah marched to Naṣībīn, and Nāṣir al-Dawlah left it for Mayyāfāriqīn. His companions abandoned him and returned to Muʿizz al-Dawlah seeking protection. When Nāṣir al-Dawlah saw that, he went to his brother Sayf al-Dawlah in Aleppo. When he arrived, Sayf al-Dawlah came out to meet him, and he went to great lengths to honor him, serving him personally, even removing his boots with his own hands. Nāṣir's companions were in his fortresses in the region of al-Mawṣil and al-Jazīrah, raiding Muʿizz al-Dawlah's men in the region, killing and capturing some of them, and cutting off supplies from them. Then Sayf al-Dawlah corresponded with Muʿizz al-Dawlah about peace. Messengers went back and forth about it, but Muʿizz al-Dawlah refused to have Nāṣir al-Dawlah guarantee the lands because of his repeated breach of agreements with him. So Sayf al-Dawlah guaranteed the lands on his behalf for two thousand dirhams and nine hundred thousand dirhams, and the release of those of his companions captured at Sinjār and elsewhere. That was in Muḥarram of the year 348 [AH]. Muʿizz al-Dawlah only agreed to peace after he had secured the lands because funds had become scarce for him, and people had fallen behind in delivering the land tax, arguing that they could not reach their crops. They sought protection from the Arabs, Nāṣir al-Dawlah's followers. So Muʿizz al-Dawlah was compelled to withdraw, and he disdained that. When Sayf al-Dawlah's letter reached him, he was relieved by it and agreed to what he requested of peace. Then he withdrew to Baghdād.
