Shādhān narrated from him. He was trustworthy. He died in Shaʿbān of this year and was buried beside Abū ʿUmar al-Zāhid, opposite Maʿrūf al-Karkhī. 2574 - Muḥammad b. Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khālid, Abū Jaʿfar al-Tājir al-Baghdādī. His hearing was sound and his sources were reliable. He traveled to Egypt and Syria, then settled in Rayy, so he was called al-Rāzī. He owned camels, so he was nicknamed al-Jammāl. He came to Khurasan and stayed in Naysābūr, then went on to Samarqand. The senior shaykhs heard from him. He narrated from ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad, from his father, and from Abū Bakr al-Quṭrubbulī, from Sarī al-Saqaṭī. He died in Samarqand in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year. 2575 - Muḥammad b. Yaʿqūb b. Yūsuf b. Maʿqil b. Sinān b. ʿAnān b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Umawī, their client, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Aṣamm. He was born in the year 247. He saw Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā al-Dhuhlī but did not hear from him. Then he heard from many people. His father took him on journeys to Isfahan, Makkah, Egypt, Syria, Damietta, al-Jazīrah, Baghdad, and other lands. He heard from their shaykhs and returned to Khurasan when he was thirty years old, already a major traditionist. His deafness appeared only after his return from travel, then it worsened until he could not hear the braying of a donkey. There was no disagreement about his truthfulness, the soundness of his hearings, and his father's accuracy in recording them. He was devout in religion. He called the adhān for seventy years in his mosque. He copied manuscripts and ate from the work of his own hands. Some people criticized him for taking something in return for teaching ḥadīth, but it was his son and his copyist who did that. As for him, he disliked it. He taught ḥadīth for seventy-six years. Fathers, sons, and grandsons heard from him. Travel to him from the lands was continuous. Al-Ḥākim Abū ʿAbd Allāh said: Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Aṣamm came out to us while we were in his mosque, and the street was full of people. When he saw the crowd and the strangers, who stood to make way for him and carried him on their shoulders to his mosque, when he reached the mosque he sat on the wall of the mosque and wept for a long time. Then he said: "It is as if I see this street with none of you entering it. For I cannot hear, my eyesight has weakened, departure is near, and the appointed time has ended." It was only about a month before his eyesight failed, travel stopped, the strangers departed, and his situation came to the point that a pen would be handed to him, and he understood by that that they were seeking narration. Then he would recite ḥadīths that he had memorized: fourteen ḥadīths and seven stories. He died in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of this year. May Allah have mercy on him, on us, and on all Muslims.
