Tarikh (al-Tabari) 4133
Then the year 346 AH began
Translation
✧ In this year there occurred in Iraq, the lands of al-Rayy, al-Jabal, Qumm, and the like, many continuous earthquakes, lasting about forty days, subsiding then returning. Because of that, many buildings collapsed, many waters sank, and many people died—indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we return. In al-Rayy and its environs there were great earthquakes, and the town of al-Ṭālaqān was swallowed up, with only about thirty men escaping from its people. One hundred and fifty villages of al-Rayy's villages were swallowed up, and the matter extended to Ḥulwān, most of which was swallowed up. The earth cast up the bones of the dead, waters burst forth from it, a mountain at al-Rayy split apart, and a village was suspended between heaven and earth with its inhabitants for half a day, then it was swallowed up. The earth split into great fissures, from which stinking waters and great smoke emerged. Thus did Ibn al-Jawzī relate.
