Then the year 346 AH began
فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ كَثُرَ بِبَغْدَاذَ وَنَوَاحِيهِمَا أَوْرَامُ الْحَلْقِ وَالْمَاشَرَا، وَكَثُرَ الْمَوْتُ بِهِمَا، وَمَوْتُ الْفَجْأَةِ، وَكُلُّ مَنِ افْتَصَدَ، انْصَبَّ إِلَى ذِرَاعَيْهِ مَادَّةٌ حَادَّةٌ عَظِيمَةٌ، تَبِعَهَا حُمَّى حَادَّةٌ، وَمَا سَلِمَ أَحَدٌ مِمَّنِ افْتَصَدَ، وَكَانَ الْمَطَرُ مَعْدُومًا. عَنْ أَبِي الْقَاسِمِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْمُحْسِنِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو الْفَرَجِ الْأَصْبِهَانِيُّ: أَنَّ لِصًّا نَقَّبَ بِبَغْدَادَ فِي زَمَنِ الطَّاعُونِ الَّذِي كَانَ فِي سَنَةِ سِتٍّ وَأَرْبَعِينَ وَثَلَاثِمِائَةٍ فَمَاتَ مَكَانَهُ وَهُوَ عَلَى الْمُنَقَّبِ، وَأَنَّ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْقَاضِي لَبِسَ سَوَادَهُ لِيَخْرُجَ إِلَى الْجَامِعِ فَيَحْكُمُ، وَلَبِسَ أَحَدَ خُفَّيْهِ وَجَاءَ لِيَلْبَسَ الْآخَرَ فَمَاتَ.
Translation
✧ In this year there spread in Baghdad and its surrounding districts swellings of the throat and the mumps (al-māsharā), and death from them became frequent, as did sudden death. Every person who was bled had a severe and copious sharp fluid pour down to his forearms, followed by a severe fever, and not one of those who were bled survived. Rain was absent. On the authority of Abū al-Qāsim ʿAlī b. al-Muḥsin, from his father, who said: Abū al-Faraj al-Aṣbahānī informed me that a thief made a breach in a wall in Baghdad during the time of the plague that occurred in the year three hundred and forty-six, and he died on the spot while he was at the breach; and that Ismāʿīl the qāḍī put on his black robes in order to go out to the congregational mosque and adjudicate, and he put on one of his khuffs and came to put on the other, and he died.
