Compendium of Accounts of the Earlier Prophets
Translation
✧ Al-Bukhārī said, on the authority of Shaqīq, who said: ʿAbd Allāh—he is Ibn Masʿūd—said: It is as if I am looking at the Messenger of Allah ﷺ relating about a prophet among the prophets whom his people struck and made bleed, while he was wiping the blood from his face and saying: O Allah, forgive my people, for they do not know. Muslim narrated it from the ḥadīth of al-Aʿmash in a similar manner. Imām Aḥmad said, with his chain of transmission, on the authority of a man, on the authority of Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who said: A man placed his hand on the Prophet ﷺ and said: By Allah, I cannot bear to place my hand on you because of the severity of your fever. The Prophet ﷺ said: "We, the company of prophets, have affliction multiplied for us just as reward is multiplied for us. If a prophet among the prophets was afflicted with lice until it killed him, and if a prophet among the prophets was afflicted with poverty until he took a cloak and wrapped it around himself, they would rejoice in affliction just as you rejoice in ease." And on the authority of Muṣʿab b. Saʿd, on the authority of his father, who said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, which people are most severely tried? He said: The prophets, then the righteous, then the next best and the next best of people. A man is tried according to his religion; if there is firmness in his religion, his trial is increased, and if there is weakness in his religion, it is lightened for him. Trials do not cease to afflict the servant until he walks on the face of the earth with no sin upon him. Al-Tirmidhī, al-Nasāʾī, and Ibn Mājah narrated it from the ḥadīth of ʿĀṣim b. Abī al-Najūd, and al-Tirmidhī said: ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.
