Translation

✧ In it, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Umawī, ruler of al-Andalus, built a great ship the like of which had never been made, and sent in it goods to the lands of the east. At sea it encountered a ship carrying a messenger from Sicily to al-Muʿizz. The people of the Andalusian ship fell upon it, seized what was in it, and took the letters addressed to al-Muʿizz. When that reached al-Muʿizz, he fitted out a fleet and placed over it al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī, ruler of Sicily, and sent it to al-Andalus. They reached al-Mariyya, entered the harbor, and burned all the ships in it, and seized that ship, which had returned from Alexandria, and in it were goods belonging to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and singing slave-girls. Some of the fleet went ashore and killed and plundered, then returned safely to al-Mahdiyya. When ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Umawī heard of it, he sent a fleet to some of the lands of Ifrīqiya. They landed and plundered. The armies of al-Muʿizz made for them, so they returned to their ships and went back to al-Andalus, having killed, and many of them were killed.
