Translation
✧ Mention of the situation of Abū ʿAlī b. Muḥtāj We have previously mentioned some of the reports about Abū ʿAlī. When he wrote to Rukn al-Dawlah asking permission to come to him, he granted him permission. He traveled to al-Rayy, and Rukn al-Dawlah met him and honored him. The Turks held a banquet for him and for those with him. Abū ʿAlī requested that a covenant be written for him from the caliph granting him authority over Khurāsān. Rukn al-Dawlah sent to Muʿizz al-Dawlah about that, and he sent him a covenant for what he requested, and he sent him a reinforcement from his army. Abū ʿAlī traveled to Khurāsān (and took control of Naysābūr, and had the khuṭbah proclaimed there for al-Muṭīʿ and in whatever he took control of in Khurāsān), whereas the khuṭbah had not been proclaimed for him there before that. Then Nūḥ died in the midst of that, and his son ʿAbd al-Malik succeeded him. When his authority was established, he sent Bakr b. Mālik to Khurāsān from Bukhārā, and made him commander over its armies, and ordered him to expel Abū ʿAlī from Khurāsān. He marched with the armies toward Abū ʿAlī, and Abū ʿAlī’s companions and army scattered from him, and there remained with him two hundred men of his companions, apart from the Daylamites who were with him as a reinforcement for him. He was forced to flee, and he traveled toward Rukn al-Dawlah, who lodged him with him in al-Rayy. Ibn Mālik took control of Khurāsān, and resided in Naysābūr and pursued Abū ʿAlī’s companions.
