✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year 2536 - Al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad b. Mūsā b. Isḥāq b. Mūsā, Abū ʿAlī al-Anṣārī. He heard Abū Bakr b. Abī al-Dunyā and al-Mubarrad. He was trustworthy (thiqah). He died in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year. 2537 - ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. Abī al-Fahm, Abū al-Qāsim al-Tanūkhī, the grandfather of Abū al-Qāsim al-Tanūkhī from whom Abū Bakr al-Khaṭīb narrates: He was born in Antioch in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of the year 278. He came to Baghdad in his youth and studied jurisprudence there according to the school of Abū Ḥanīfah. He heard from al-Baghawī and others. He knew kalām according to the school of the Muʿtazilah [and] he knew grammar and composed poetry. He held the qaḍāʾ in al-Ahwāz and assumed the qaḍāʾ of Īdhaj on behalf of al-Muṭīʿ. Al-Tanūkhī said: My father informed us, saying: [My father narrated to us, saying:] I heard my father one day, when I was then fifteen years old, reciting part of the long qaṣīdah of Diʿbil [b. ʿAlī] in which he boasts of Yemen and enumerates their virtues, and in it he refutes al-Kumayt's boasting of Nizār. Its opening is: Afīqī min malāmiki yā ẓaʿīnā kafāki al-lawma marru al-arbaʿīnā It is about six hundred verses. I wished to memorize it because of the glories of the people of Yemen it contained, so I said: "O my master, hand it over to me so that I may memorize it." He resisted me, but I insisted upon him. Then he said: "It is as if I see you taking it and memorizing from it fifty verses or a hundred verses, then throwing the book aside and damaging it on me." I said: "Hand it over to me." So he brought it out and handed it to me. His words had an effect on me. I entered a room of mine that was assigned to me in his house, and I secluded myself there and did not busy myself that day and night with anything other than memorizing it. When it was the time before dawn, I had [already] finished all of it and mastered it. I went out to him in the morning as was my custom, and sat before him. He said: "How much of Diʿbil's qaṣīdah have you memorized?" I said: "I have memorized all of it." He became angry and thought that I had lied to him, and said: "Recite it!" I took the notebook out of my sleeve and opened it. He looked into it while I recited, until I had passed more than a hundred verses. Then he turned several pages of it and said: "Recite from here." So I recited about a hundred verses. Then he turned until he came near its end by a hundred verses and said: "Recite from here." So I recited to him the last hundred verses of it to its end. What he saw of the excellence of my memorization astounded him, so he embraced me and kissed my head and my eyes, and said: "O my son, do not tell anyone about this, for I fear for you [from the evil eye]." He also said: My father made me memorize, and after him I memorized from the poetry of Abū Tammām and al-Buḥturī, apart from what I had memorized of other modern and ancient poets, two hundred qaṣīdahs. He said: My father and our shaykhs in Syria used to say: "Whoever memorizes forty qaṣīdahs of the two Ṭāʾīs and does not compose poetry is a donkey in the skin of a human being." So I composed poetry when I was under twenty. He died in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of this year. 2538 - Al-Qāsim b. al-Qāsim b. Mahdī, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Sayyārī, the son of the daughter of Aḥmad b. Sayyār.
